AFTER CRYING

Symphonic Prog • Hungary

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]E drept, sunt unguri. Very Happy

After Crying biography
Very important band from the rich Hungarian prog scene which makes a
very complex and moody music. There is a huge variety in their music
among their discography. Some albums are very dark, yet beautiful, with a
calm atmosphere provided by cellos and violins among moody keyboards
and guitars. Other albums hold a more consistent sound where you'll find
ELP influences (mainly on the Hammond passages).

AGALLOCH

Experimental/Post Metal • United States

Agalloch biography
The essence of AGALLOCH'S music is a combination of
cold, dark sorrow and natural aesthetic beauty. The foundation of the
band began in late 1995 when a doom/death project called Aeolachrymae
was reduced to a pile of ash. From those ashes, three bands were born -
SUSURRUS INANIS, NOTHING and AGALLOCH. The primary goal in the beginning
was to create majestic and epic dark metal. This vision was shared by
the two main creators; John Haughm and Shane Breyer. In early 1996, a
few songs slowly started to take form and in the summer, a second
guitarist, Don Anderson was found. Later in the autumn, the debut demo
"From Which Of This Oak" was recorded and shortly after its release, a
permanent bassist - Jason William Walton Joined the effort. In early
1998 AGALLOCH recorded a new promo tape for labels only. The uniqueness
of that promo earned the band a deal with The End Records and in January
of 1999 they entered the studio to record their debut album.

JAN AKKERMAN

Jazz Rock/Fusion • Netherlands

Jan Akkerman biography
Jan Akkerman was born on Christmas Eve 1946 and
first picked up a guitar aged 5. Legend has it that he played accordian
aged 3, and was entirely self-taught on the guitar, but in actual fact
he took classical guitar lessons, studied at Amsterdam Music Lyceum for 5
years and won a scholarship. His father was a guitarist, and his mother
played the accordian.

He took a keen interest in group
music-making, joining local bands The Friendship Sextet and The Shaking
Hearts. In 1961, aged 15, he recorded his first single with his current
band, Johnny & The Cellar Rockers, which also featured Pierre Van
der Linden. The Cellar Rockers became the Hunters, and the first hit was
scored with a cover of "Mr Tambourine Man", but an even bigger hit came
from an original song called "The Russian Spy and I", inspired largely
by the Shadows, but with a notable guitar solo from Akkerman.

ALCEST

Experimental/Post Metal • France

Alcest biography
ALCEST is a French experimental/ post black metal act formed in 2000 in
Avignon, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The band started out as a black
metal act but has gradually incorporated shoegaze and experimental/ post
black metal elements into their sound. ALCEST is basically a one-man
act consisting of Neige who compose, sing and play all instruments.
ALCEST first release was the "Tristesse Hivernale" demo tape. At this
point ALCEST was a three-piece consisting of Neige on Rhythm &
Acoustic guitar, Drums, Vocals, Argoth on bass and Hegnor on lead
guitar. The two latter are only featured on this release. Neige released
the "Le Secret" EP in 2005 and in 2007 ALCEST debut full-length studio
album "Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde" followed. ALCEST has released some
split releases since. Neige also hold membership of other prolific Frech
underground acts such as AMESOEURS, PESTE NOIRE and VALFUNDE.

AMON DÜÜL

Krautrock • Germany

Amon Düül biography
Amon Düül were a huge musical collective that had a spectacular
appearance in a tv-show in 1968. Before they put out their first album
they split though, and one half set off to form Amon Düül 2 (see there).
The others kept the name Amon Düül and in 1969 published the first
Krautrock album ever, "Psychedelic Underground". It was very badly
produced, and the music consisted of long improvisations, but after this
album no other band needed to have an inferiority complex. Their second
official album "Paradieswärts Düül" (1970) is much better produced and
has a folky touch. The albums "Collapsing - Singvögel Rückwärts",
"Disaster" and "Experimente" stem from the same session as "Psychedelic
Underground" and are of similar nature; they were published after the
band had split up already.

TORI AMOS

Crossover Prog • United States

Tori Amos biography
Vocalist, musician, songwriter and record producer Tori Amos was born in
North Carolina USA in 1963. She has actively been making music from
1986 to the present day. Often unfairly compared to Kate Bush or as a
Kate Bush clone, Tori Amos has her own unique style of pop infected,
piano led music with a very distinct vocal style. Her career commenced
with the much lauded highly personal Little Earthquakes release in
1992. Many followers of her works often refer to this work as a great
starting point for determining strong progressive song structures. Yet
she evolved musically and further challenged boundaries with highly
prolific releases, making even her most lukewarm followers respecting of
her extraordinary ability to adapt different styles and release albums
regularly.

Tori Amos concentrated the latter part of the 90's
based in the UK. Full of baroque influences, the conceptually strong
Boys for Pele was released. Amos set up her studio in Cornwall, UK and
subsequent releases ensued. To Venus & Back released in 1999
combines gothic elements, with layered keyboards and strong musicianship
throughout, not least Amos's haunting vocals. In 2001 Amos left the
Atlantic fold and signed up with Epic Records which was a culmination of
more pop crossover sounding albums, especially The Beekeeper released
in 2005. Crossover with a great concept album as well.

Tori Amos
continues to release further works. Her collaborations with numerous
artists over the years stand testimony to her pedigree as a musician and
a welcome addition to any progressive reference site. She is currently
contracted to Universal Republic, her latest album Midwinter Graces
released in 2009.

ANATHEMA

Experimental/Post Metal • United Kingdom

Formed in the summer of 1990 in Liverpool (also home to THE BEATLES), by
Daniel Cavanagh (guitarist). Their original line-up was: Darren White
(vocals), Vincent Cavanagh (guitars), Daniel Cavanagh (guitars), Jamie
Cavanagh (bass), and John Dougals (percussion), under the moniker PAGAN
ANGEL. Since then, there's been too many line-up changes to mention
here, although Vincent, Daniel, and John have all maintained status in
the band, except Daniel briefly in 2002 (click on the album's for more
line-up information). They would release one demo and then change their
name to ANATHEMA. They released two more demo's and then were discovered
by Hammy of Peaceville Records, who signed them. They went on to be the
most overlooked gem of the '90's. Starting as romantic doom metal ("The
Crestfallen", "Serenades", and "The Silent Enigma"), and then
transitioning into an avant-garde experimental force. Each album bears
evidence of progression. The vocals are always improving and becoming
even more poignant, accenting the music and lyrics (which this band are
probably the best lyricist's out there). "Eternity" was sort of a
transitional album for them, somewhat abandoning the guttural cries of
despondency and replacing that with Vincent Cavanagh's beautiful singing
voice. Their influences range from PINK FLOYD to The BEATLES to
RADIOHEAD. The future for ANATHEMA is promising because they are the
future.

Highly recommended: "Pentecost III," "The Silent Enigma," Eternity," and "A Natural Disaster."

ANDROMEDA

Progressive Metal • Sweden

Andromeda biography
It was 1999 when ANDROMEDA officially made their appearance: Johan
Reinholdz, guitars, submitted the demo "Welcome to forever" to the
record label WAR-music. There was interest from the label so later that
year Thomas Lejon, drums, Martin Hedin, keyboards, Johan Reinholdz and
bass player Gert Daun started rehearsing the songs for the band's first
album.

The band entered the studio in March 2000 to record the
album with Daniel Bergstrand as the producer. Lawrence Mackrory was
hired to perform the vocals in "EXTENSION OF THE WISH" which was mixed
and ready a month later, hitting the record shops in February 2001. In
the meanwhile, David Fremberg joined the band as a vocalist in August
2000. The sound of their debut can be described as heavy-intense but at
the same time very melodic progressive metal and received significant
attention from the press and fans. A tour of Sweden and an appearance at
the Progpower festival in the Netherlands in October came to support
this release.

The vocals were re-recorded and a re-mixed version
including two new tracks was released in France by the label NTS in
November 2000. The next step of the band was a French tour with Evergrey
in February 2001, while tracks for their upcoming release "II=I"
started taking shape. Recordings of the new tracks continued throughout
the year with Martin Hedin as the producer and finally the album was
completed in August. This time the style can be described as more
complex and vocal-oriented.

Fabian Gustavsson, bass, replaced
Gert Daun in 2003 and after a world wide release of the album and tours,
the band started composing material for "CHIMERA" in the spring of
2004. This time, the approach was towards a heavier, more in-your-face
solid rocking sound, creating a new, fresh chapter in ANDROMEDA's
history. Martin was again the producer and the album was finally
released in the spring of 2006.

ANEKDOTEN

Heavy Prog • Sweden

Anekdoten biography
In the early 90s a wave of King Crimson inspired new
progrock bands emerged in Scandinavia. One of the first was four piece
formation Anekdoten from Sweden and they are still alive and progging,
unlike their promising contemporaries Anglagard and Landberk.

Anekdoten
their roots are in 1990 when Nicklas Berg (guitar and Mellotron) and
Jan Erik Liljestrom (bass and vocals) decide to found a band to make
progressive rock music. They name the band King Edward and the musicians
start to rehearse, soon accompanied by percussionist Peter Nordin.
Their repertoire consists of songs from King Crimson. In 1990 Anna Sofi
Dahlberg joins King Edward, this inspires them to intensify their
rehearsals, to write own compositions, to rename the band into Anekdoten
and to release two demo-tapes under their new name in 1991 and 1992.
With the second demo things start to roll for Anekdoten because several
Skandinavian progressive rock labels show their attention and invite the
band to make a CD on their label. But the band prefers to release their
debut album entitled Vemod on their own label in the Spring of 1993.
The press hails the obviously KING CRIMSON inspired and Mellotron
drenched compositions. A strong point in the music from Anekdoten is the
hugh tension between the mellow, often melancholical climates and the
dynamic parts delivering ROBERT FRIPP-inspired howling electric guitar,
an aggressive and propulsive bass and splendid drumwork.

In 1994
Anekdoten starts a worldwide tour (including Sweden, Norway, Germany,
Switzerland, Italy, USA and Canada) with an acclaimed performance on the
annual USA progressive rock festival Progfest as their absolute
highlight. Some tracks from that treat of a concert are present on the
"Nearfest 1994" double live CD and video.

Late 1995 Anekdoten
releases their eagerly awaited second album entitled "Nucleus", the band
succeeds to sound more original and is on the way to develop an own
musical identity.

ANYONE'S DAUGHTER

Symphonic Prog • Germany

Anyone's Daughter biography
Another symphonic German band in the vein of Eloy, Anyone's Daughter
were formed in the seventies and disbanded with the release of 1986's
Last Track album. The band reformed in 2000 to release two additional
studios and one live album.

While the band originally recorded
mostly English lyrics, they returned to their native German the last
several years of their original existence. Their debut album Adonis is
distinguished by the sidelong track of the same name, a four-part epic
featuring heavy use of keyboards (primarily Moog), and periodic violent
crescendos combined with languid guitar lulls. The band's subsequent
albums were increasingly filled with shorter, often experimental works
and occasional spoken-word passages. While the early music can be
favorably compared to Genesis, their later work is more in the style of
German contemporaries like Grobschnitt and Amenophis.

The band's
musical peak is arguably their third release Piktors Verwandlungen, a
ranging experimental concept album based loosely on Herman Hesse's novel
"Pictor's Metamorphosis", a brooding lament of lost innocence and
spiritual exploration. This was also the band's first recording in their
native German tongue.

The band toured heavily in the early
eighties before civil service commitments and outside interests caused
their eventual fracture in 1986. With their reformation in 2000, the
band has returned to English vocals, and have adopted a sound that
ranges from electronica to jazz/fusion, but is primarily hard rocking
with ranges of intensity.

APHRODITE'S CHILD

Symphonic Prog • Greece

Aphrodite's Child biography
The short story of APHRODITE'S CHILD starts in
1968, when the Greek/Egyptian bassist and vocalist named Artemios
Ventouris Roussos (Demis Roussos)
and the powerful drummer Lucas Sideras
were supposed to meet the multi instrumentalist Evengelio Odyssey
Papathanassiou (VANGELIS)
who had left his first group FORMINXS, but
the first two were not admitted to the United Kingdom because they had
no working permits but custom officers discovered photos and tapes in
their luggage so they assumed the musicians intended to stay.

A
few months later the three musicians join in Paris with Anargyros
Koulouris (Silver Koulouris) a very competent guitar player and they
decide to form a new band which was supposed to mix traditional Greek
music with Western Pop and Psychedelia, but they ended doing much more
than was expected.

Due to their financial situation they had to
sign a terrible contract with a record company. Soon after the birth of
the band, Silver Kouloris has to leave the group because he was called
for his Military Service and only joins again for the recording of their
last album 666, during these years Demis Roussos has to play guitar and
bass.

Their first two releases "End of the World" (which
includes two hit singles, "Rain and Tears" and "I Want To Live", the
last one reached N° 1 in most Europe) and "It's Five O'Clock" showed a
commercial oriented band with a very peculiar sound, but it's not until
1970, when they start to record the brilliant and adventurous "666" that
they get a place in progressive Rock history even when the relation
inside the band was at the lowest point, mostly because VANGELIS wanted
to do more serious music than Lucas Sideras and Roussos.

The
paradox is that this masterpiece which combines 100% Symphonic
structure, British Psychedelia, Greek Orthodox Religious music with a
touch of pop was only released in 1972 (after the band had already
split) due to several reasons like the controversial concept ("The Book
of Revelations"), the confession made by the band that "666" was
conceived under the influence of Sahlep (some people believed this word
was referred to some kind of pagan divinity when in fact it's a common
non alcoholic beverage from Turkey) and the track "Infinity" sung by the
great actress Irene Papas which is really a five minutes orgasm.

AREA

Rock Progressivo Italiano • Italy

Area biography
Undoubtedly one of the more adventurous, AREA were
also a very important band on the seventies Italian prog scene, their
first three albums in particular come highly recommended and essential
listening to anyone discovering the RPI genre.

The band formed in
1972 stabilizing with a line-up of superb musicians for their debut
album featuring ex I RIBELLI vocalist Demetrio Stratos, ex I CALIFFI
guitarist Paulo Tofani, bassist Patrick Djivas (later to join PFM),
drummer Giulio Capiozzo, keyboardist Patrizio Fariselli and on sax,
flute and clarinet Victor Busnello. "Arbeit Macht Frei" (work will make
your free) was released on Cramps records in 1973 and is a very
accomplished debut by anyone's standards featuring an exciting blend
jazz, rock and prog with Arabian and Greek (Stratos was Greek)
influences along with a touch of the Avant. The bands lyrics show a
politically left wing stance and Stratos was already displaying his
inventive vocal style, using it as an instrument much of the time rather
than in the traditional sense, something he would develop to further
extremes on future albums (including solo work).

By 1974, when
their second album "Caution Radiation Area" was released, Djivas had
jumped ship for PFM being replaced by Ares Tavolazzi and Busnello also
left but was not replaced. It's a harder listen than the debut leaning
more towards the avant with a heavier emphasis on free jazz, once again
the musicianship is exemplary and features some incredibly powerful
moments. In comparison "Crac!" released in 1975 whilst still displaying
the same inventive mix of styles was more accessible and is an ideal
early port of call to the uninitiated. That year also saw the release of
their first live album "Are(A)zione".

Two further studio albums
followed where the band continued to expand their musical palette,
"Maledetti" released in 1976 where the band used a host of other
musicians to help out and "1978 Gli Dei Se Ne Vanno, Gli Arrabbiati
Restano". By this point Tofani had left the band. It would also prove to
be the last album to feature Stratos who sadly died of cancer in 1979
at the age of only 35.

ARSENAL

Jazz Rock/Fusion • Russia

Arsenal biography
ARSENAL, pioneers of jazz-rock in the Soviet Union,
is a creature of Alexey (often spelled like Alexei) Kozlov (b. 1935),
professional architect and self-taught saxophonist and composer. He
played jazz since the 50s, had deep knowledge of its different styles,
was a member of numerous bands, participated in jazz festivals in the
USSR and abroad (Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary) and up to the 70s he
had a good reputation in jazz circles. But as open-minded musician he
was (and still is) always interested in different music styles.
Listening to the music of bands like CHICAGO, MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA,
BLOOD, SWEET AND TEARS, PINK FLOYD, KING CRIMSON, ELP and others gave
him the idea to go in new direction and form a band, capable of playing
the fusion of these styles.

According to Alexey Kozlov, he
wanted to create a band of virtuosi, who can swing, improvise, have the
"feel of the blues" and appreciate different music styles. It was not so
easy to find musicians for new band. Most of experienced jazzmen were
skeptical about rock and did not consider it serious music. Rock music
in the Soviet Union was then in embryonic state and almost totally in
underground, even the word "rock" was associated with hostile Western
influences. Official equivalent of rock music existed in the form of
so-called vocal-instrumental ensembles - professional groups, singing
"songs of Soviet composers", without any rebellious spirit, specific to
rock. Underground rock musicians were enthusiastic, but they were not
able to play complex pieces, many of them even could not read music. The
solution came mainly in the face of young Moscow Conservatory and
Gnesin's Institute students, whose interests were not restricted by
classical music only.

ASIA

Prog Related • United Kingdom

Asia biography
ASIA were formed in 1981 by: Steve HOWE (YES) John
WETTON (KING CRIMSON, URIAH HEEP, UK ETC.) Geoff DOWNES (YES, BUGGLES,
and Carl PALMER (ELP). They were of course immediately dubbed a
"supergroup" (in the way as CREAM, EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER etc. were).
Over the years the line up has gone through constant changes, with
DOWNES being the only founding member still present (although even he
has not been ever present). Greg LAKE passed though the ranks briefly in
1983 replacing WETTON, but his voice did not suite the material, and he
left before recording any studio albums with the band.

WETTON's
return in 1984 resurrected previous conflicts with HOWE, who left to be
replaced by Mandy METER (KROKUS). ASIA effectively ceased to exist
between 1985 and 1987, when DOWNES and WETTON attempted to rekindle the
flame. They recorded a few tracks together, but WETTON soon moved on
again, and DOWNES started working with John PAYNE on alternative
projects. In 1989, WETTON and PALMER got back together forming yet
another line up with John YOUNG and Alan DARBY. The line up changes
continued into the 1990's, with DOWNES soon rejoining and bringing in
the since long serving John PAYNE. By 1991, the band still only released
three studio albums. With the release of "Aqua" in 1992, there started a
relatively settled period for ASIA in as much as the band became very
much a DOWNES/PAYNE project, with other musicians being brought in for
recording or touring as required. A reunion of the original line up
appears to have almost happened in the late 1990's, but the momentum was
lost, and it never materialised.

With such well known names in
the original ASIA , expectations were high that the new band would
produce high quality prog rock in it's truest form. ASIA however had
different ideas, and went for a far more direct and commercial sound.
The quality of the musicianship was undoubted, but many fans of the
source bands were left disappointed by the self titled debut album.
Commercially, the venture was enormously successful, with the band
enjoying both singles and album chart success. "Asia" alone has sold
over nine million copies world-wide.

Atheist biography
ATHEIST plays an extremely complex death-jazz. ATHEIST was founded in
1984 by vocalist/guitarist Kelly Shaefer and drummer Steve Flynn, later
recruiting Roger Patterson and Mark Sczawtsberg. ATHEIST progressed into
an extremely complex fusion death metal band. A few lineup changes
later, "Piece of Time" was released, and they started to tour, where
Roger Patterson was killed in a car crash. Cynic bassist Tony Choy
filled in to create the "Unquestionable Presence" album, which was their
pinnacle. Shaefer went on to form Neurotica, but the album "Elements"
appeared later out of contract. The band has then split up. ATHEIST can
be compared to the complexity of DEATH and CYNIC, playing a highly
inventive fusion oriented, breakneck speed metal.

"Unquestionable
Presence" is arguably the band's best album and a landmark in
progressive metal and the Florida prog-metal scene.

Any fans of complex music, fast playing, and extreme metal should love ATHEIST.

This was a Brazilian septet including Mario Neto (guitar/vocals), Sergio
Villarim (keyboards), Delto Simas (bass), Marco Veríssimo (drums),
Marcus Moura (flute/accordeon), Mr. Paul (percussion) and Jane Duboc
(vocals). A rich and symphonic music with wonderful keyboards and a very
nice flute which enlightens the compositions full of interest and
detours. A few female vocal interventions complete to enrich this great
work. The band surpasses their influences: LOCANDA DEL FATE, PFM, QUELLA
VECCHIA LOCANDA and ILLUSION.

They made two albums entitled
"Depois Do Fim" ('83) and "Sete Cidades" ('99). In '95 Rarity Records
released their first LP on CD with the addition of a bonus track (due to
appear in their second LP). The CD "Depois Do Fim" is one of the
highlights of the South-American progrock: a compelling blend of varied
keyboards (vintage synthesizers, strings, piano, organ), skillful
acoustic and electric guitar and strong Portuguese vocals. The nine
compositions (four instrumental) sound warm and elaborate with many
changing atmospheres. I'm mostly impressed by Mario Neto's alternating
guitarplay: from powerful and howling electric guitar to a slight
Andalusian touch and classical like JOHN WILLIAMS (Sky-era) or using the
tremolo-technique on the Spanish guitar (like "Recuerdos de la
Alhambra" from TARREGA). Not to be missed by any serious progrock
aficionado!

BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST

Crossover Prog • United Kingdom

Barclay James Harvest biography
In 1966 two R & B bands local to Oldham (UK)
merged to form a blues outfit THE BLUES KEEPERS. With sponsorship from a
local businessman (also their manager) they rented an 18th century
farmhouse where they practised extensively, gradually moving towards a
progressive rock style then beginning to emerge. On turning professional
the name BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST was adopted, and the line-up stabilised
as JOHN LEES (guitars, vocals), LES HOLROYD (bass, rhythm guitar,
vocals), STUART "WOOLLY" WOLSTENHOLME (keyboards, vocals) and MEL
PRITCHARD (drums). After releasing their first single in April 1968, the
band joined the legendary progressive HARVEST label, quickly expanding
their musical horizons, chiefly by experimenting with longer evolving
song structures and orchestrations. Initially this involved the use of
woodwind, strings and brass before acquiring a MELLOTRON, but by the
time of the release of their first album 'Barclay James Harvest' in 1970
they were employing an orchestra, the grandly titled BARCLAY JAMES
HARVEST SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA led by ROBERT GODFREY who later became a
member of THE ENID.

Though producing some of their best melodic
progressive work at this time, the orchestra proved to be too expensive
and very nearly bankrupted the band, but in 1973 a move to the POLYDOR
label saw an upturn in their fortunes. With increasing commercial
success, their music began to develop towards simpler song structures
with stronger arrangements which caused detractors to dub them 'The Poor
Man's Moody Blues'! By 1979 WOOLLY left the band because he had become
disillusioned that they had moved away from their Prog roots. They
continued into the 1980s as a 3-piece augmented by hired musicians, and
with a string of melodic AOR albums finally made a commercial
break-through in Europe, particularly in Germany where they played
several major outdoor concerts, beginning with a massive free concert on
the steps of the historic Reichstag in August 1980.

SYD BARRETT

NU PUTEAM SA NU-L AMINTESC.

Syd Barrett biography
SYD BARRETT is very famous in the world of prog for helping found
space/psychadelia prog giants, PINK FLOYD, and adding his unique vocals
and lyrics to their classic debut album, "The Piper at the Gates of
Dawn". SYD BARRETT started to develop an unstable mental state and was
unable to perform properly on stage or contribute much to the band any
more. SYD BARRETT had to leave PINK FLOYD after contributing only one
song to PINK FLOYD's second album, "A Saucerful of Secrets". This track,
"Jugband Blues" was placed as the last track and served as a nice
farewell and good luck song. The albums in this profile show what Syd
did after his departure from PINK FLOYD.

His solo career was to
be as short as his time in PINK FLOYD, as he only produced 2 real studio
albums. The best of these is "The Madcap Laughs". Syd managed to write
some memorable solo tracks that were quite remeniscent of his work on
"The Piper at the Gates of Dawn".

SYD BARRETT's solo career is
arguably the best solo career of any PINK FLOYD member. Fans of early
PINK FLOYD should enjoy SYD BARRETT a lot. I would also recommend his
work to lovers of 70s Psychadelia/Space rock as well as collectors who
enjoy any PINK FLOYD solo efforts.

Why this artist must be listed in www.progarchives.com :
SYD
BARRETT is not only an important figure in the history of progressive
rock but he also founded one of the first ever progressive rock albums
and progressive rock bands. His solo work should be included on the
archives as it displays similar progressive qualities that helped to
make PINK FLOYD part of prog rock history. Rick Wright and David Gilmour
also appear on some of his works and it seems right the other PINK
FLOYD solo careers can be listed then so should SYD BARRETT's.

JEFF BECK

Jazz Rock/Fusion • United Kingdom

Jeff Beck biography
Born June 24, 1944 in Wallington, Greater London,
England Jeff Beck is one of the "Big Three" guitar gods who came from
the mid 60's band The Yardbirds (Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page being the
other two) Although never quite becoming as popular as his
contemporaries, Jeff has maintained considerable respect among
guitarists worldwide by diversifying into many different genres. He has
experimented with blues rock, heavy metal, and jazz fusion and more
recently, dabbled with techno, creating a blend of heavy guitar rock and
electronica. He has also been at the forefront of use of guitar effects
(as a short series on BBC World Service Radio in 1980, illustrated),
and one suggestion that Truth album was the first to feature the Wah Wah
(Cry-Baby) pedal extensively.

Starting as a session guitarist in
the early 60's, Beck was in a group called The Tridents, before being
asked to join the Yardbirds in 1965. Although only recording one album
with them it was during his tenure with the Yardbirds that they recorded
most of their hits. Beck left the Yardbirds partly for health reasons
and partly for his on going problem of not getting along with people in
general after 18 months.

In 1967 Beck formed a new band, the
Jeff Beck Group, which featured him on lead guitar, Rod Stewart on
vocals, Ron Wood on bass, Nicky Hopkins on piano, and Micky Waller on
drums. This group produced two albums, Truth in 1968 and Beck-Ola the
following year, and are considered the two most influential blues/rock
albums. Ths group started the blues/rock format that Led Zeppelin would
perfect within a few years - indeed a couple of the members of the
future Led Zeppelin were present for the Truth recordings. After
Stewart and Wood left the band to join Faces (then The Small Faces),
Beck went on to form a second incarnation of the Jeff Beck Group
featuring Clive Chapman (bass), Max Middleton (keyboards), Cozy Powell
(drums) and Bob Tench (vocals). With this group Beck used the blues as a
basis but piled on heavy amounts of R'n'R and R'n'B to the music. They
released two albums: Rough and Ready (1971, produced by Jeff Beck) and
The Jeff Beck Group (1972, sometimes called the "Orange" album and
produced by Steve Cropper). Going Down is perhaps the best remembered
song from this era. This was the period when Jeff Beck gained the
nickname "The Loner", in particular because of the making and sudden
breaking of bands, seemingly when these were just about to break the big
time.

BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME

Tech/Extreme Prog Metal • United States

Between The Buried And Me biography
Originally formed in 2000 by members of Prayer For Cleansing, Between
the Buried and Me play an unpredictable combination of countless styles,
generally centering around an extremely complex variety of metalcore
with death metal influences. Their constantly shifting song structures
and tight musicianship have combined with intense agression and
remarkable variety to gain them a noteworthy following. Their style of
extreme metal was introduced on their debut album in 2002 and began to
gain increased attention with 2003's The Silent Circus. The aftermath of
this release saw drastic lineup shifts in the band, with only
vocalist/keyboardist Tommy Rogers and guitarist Paul Waggoner remaining
from their previous lineup. The group's new cast of musicians included
Glass Casket guitarist Dusty Warring and drummer Blake Richardson, as
well as bassist Dan Briggs, recording and releasing Alaska in 2005 to
critical acclaim.

In 2006, the band released an album comprising of bands that influenced Between the Buried and Me.

Their
2007 release, Colors, was also released to much critical acclaim and
saw most of the metalcore/hardcore influence in their sound done away
with.

The band also released their first ever DVD in 2008,
Colors_Live, a live DVD featuring the whole of the album Colors played
from beginning to end.

BELIEVER

Tech/Extreme Prog Metal • United States

o trupa de pocaiti 'extremi'.
Cool
pe vremea lor, foarte tari.

Believer biography
BELIEVER is a technical/ progressive thrash metal
act formed in Colebrook, Pennsylvania in 1986 by Joey Daub ( Drums) and
Kurt Bachman ( vocals, guitar). They were joined by Howe Kraft ( Bass)
and David Baddorf (guitar) and started playing melodic metal. They
released the demo cassette The Return in 1987. BELIEVER started moving
towards heavier territories after that and began playing technical
thrash metal. An important ingredient in BELIEVER`s music that´s worthy
of notice is Scott Laird´s orchestral string parts which became more and
more integrated into their music with each album. Scott Laird was one
of Bachman´s old high school friend. Many of the progressive elements in
BELIEVER`s music come from his involvement.

Right from the
start the band´s lyrics about philosophy and theology have put them on
the forefront of the Christian metal movement and the aggressive sound
on the debut album Extraction from Mortality (1989) gave them an
identity as one of the most heavy Christian metal bands around.
Extraction from Mortality was released through R.E.X. Records and was
mostly distributed through Christian bookstores. Howe Kraft was replaced
by new bassist Wyatt Robertson in 1990. Roadrunner Records signed
BELIEVER for the release of of their second album Sanity Obscure (1991).
The album was still distributed to the Christian market by R.E.X.
Records though. Sanity Obscure greatly increased the band´s success and
they toured with BOLT THROWER and SACRIFICE.

Wyatt Robertson and
David Baddorf left BELIEVER before the recording of the band´s third
album Dimensions (1993). Jim Winters joined as the new bassist.
Dimensions was distributed in a similar way to how Sanity Obscure was.
R.E.X. Records distributed the album to the Christian market while
Roadrunner Records distributed the album to the secular audience.
Dimensions is generally considered BELIEVER`s most progressive album
with both technical thrash metal, industrial ( samples) and orchestral
string parts as well as some sophisticated lyrics that deal with
philosophical questions about the existence of GOD. The album features a
20 minute three part epic suite called Trilogy of Knowledge.
