KAYO DOT

RIO/Avant-Prog • United States

Kayo Dot biography
Kayo Dot is a New York based avant-garde rock and experimental metal
group which formed in 2003 after several members left Toby Driver's
previous project, Maudlin of the Well. Kayo Dot has been subject to
several line-up changes, although the constant members are Toby Driver
on bass, lead vocals, guitar, clarinet and keyboards, and Mia Matsumiya
on violin, viola and vocals.

The band released their debut
composition, 'Choirs Of The Eye', on John Zorn's label Tzadik in 2003.
This album captures atmospheric metal with avant-garde overtones with an
evocative and sincerely experimental approach. 'Choirs Of The Eye'
continues the combination of metal and atmospheric compositions which
maudlin of the Well are known for, and is a good entry point for new
listeners.

The band's 2006 follow up, 'Dowsing Anemone With
Copper Tongue', combines a more avant and less metal overall sound, and
features over an hour of guitar based compositions with less frontal
vocals and a higher emphasis on atmospheric textures and avant-garde
playing.

In 2008, they released their third LP, 'Blue Lambency
Downwards', which features several shorter compositions bookended by two
ten minute pieces. This album is the least metal of their output, and
is made up mostly of drum textures combined with string sections and
clarinet playing. The connection of metal within a typical sense is gone
from the band's sound, replaced by an occasionally aggressive and
consistently freeform sound.

Kayo Dot's overall sound has become
less metal based since their formation, and it is advisable that metal
fans start with their debut. Kayo Dot is recommended to listeners of
avant-rock, experimental and atmospheric music, fans of maudlin of the
Well and anyone interested in a unique combination of metal and
experimental textures.

The current line-up consists of Toby
Driver, Mia Matsumiya, Terran Olson, David Bodie and Daniel Means, who
all play several instruments.

'.With Kayo Dot I try to
constantly discover new ways of being "heavy" and "dark" without
resorting to the same old cheap tricks that so many other "heavy" and
"dark" bands rely on. In that case, we are the most metal band of all'

probabil trupa cu cea mai mare influenta in aceasta zona.
King Crimson biography
" When you want to hear where music is going in the future, you put on a King Crimson album."
- Bill Bruford, 1995

For
all its break-ups, periods of non-existence and fluctuating
methodology, King Crimson remains one of the interminably compelling
bands playing within the domain of rock music to this day. Widely
acknowledged as being the harbingers of the art-rock genre with their
monumental 1969 album "In The Court Of The Crimson King", they paved the
way for innovative art-rock/progressive rock bands such as Yes, ELP etc
etc. in the early '70s as well as providing a stimulus for more recent
neo-progressive bands like Tool and The Mars Volta through their
post-progressive work in the early '80s and '90s. More of a frame of
mind than a style, the music of King Crimson has constantly sought out
sustenance through amalgamations of existing forms of music, veering
away from any contemporary mould, nullifying any notions that it is
necessary to adhere to proven formulas in order to create commercially
feasible music.

KOREKYOJIN

RIO/Avant-Prog • Japan

o trupa interesanta, descoperita din intamplare.
Korekyojin biography
Yet another of Yoshida Tatsuya's many musical projects, KOREKYOJIN sees
the RUINS mainman working with Kido Natsuki, BONDAGE FRUIT's guitar ace,
and sometime GROUND ZERO bassist Nasuno Mitsuru.

The band
originally convened in 1999 and released their well received debut
album, recorded in a single day. It looked as though that would be all
from this particular line up, but 5 years later they reconvened and
recorded "Arabesque", which was subsequently withdrawn and reissued with
extra live tracks. A (mostly) live album, "Isotope", followed in 2005
and a third studio album, "Jackson", was recorded in 2006. While the
style will be recognisable to fans of KOENJIHYAKKEI and RUINS,
KOREKYOJIN has its own sound and musical agenda. Almost everything is
composed by Yoshida, barring some brief group improvisations, and there
are no vocals. The playing is extremely tight and has a strong jazz
influence with an unexpected but highly effective dash of funk thrown in
for good measure. The compositions and arrangements push all three
members of the band to their limits without ever descending into
pointless noodling or lengthy solos, and there are some truly
beathtaking instrumental performances on all their releases.

The
best album to start with is probably the live "Isotope"which includes
pieces from the first two albums played with a verve and bite that is
sometimes missing from the studio recordings. All their releases are
worth investigating, however, and like MASSACRE they demonstrate just
how versatile the basic power trio format can be.
An essential collaboration between 3 of the best players on the Japanese progressive rock scene.

KRAFTWERK

Progressive Electronic • Germany

Kraftwerk biography
Remaining one of the most influential bands in the
history of popular music, we mustn't forget that KRAFTWERK typical sound
is the result of many years and decades of experimentations, continuous
works and researches in the possibilities offered by the acoustic,
electronic and rock instruments.

In 1968, the two original
members (Florian Schneider and Ralf Hutter, two longstanding friends)
formed ORGANISATION. The famous German producer Conny Plank helped them
to record their first album "Tone Float". Historically this album
figures among the first albums released in the Krautrock genre, next to
recordings from CAN, AMON DUUL, TANGERINE DREAM. The tone is floating
but above all largely dominated by long, free improvisations, mixing
organs, electronic experimentations with acoustic percussions.

During
the year 1970, R. Hutter and F. Schneider dissolved the band to form
KRAFTWERK whose name means power station (in German). Klaus Dinger and
Andreas Hokman join the band and record an album called "Kraftwerk".
Very minimalist, the record's cover is a perfect illustration of a
repetitive music made of sound manipulations, punctuated by the flute
and the electronic organ parts. The atmosphere is slightly "garage", a
bit noisy, sometimes ethereal and spacey (Megahertz). At this time, the
band's reputation remains discreet, despite a certain success. One year
later in 1971, Klaus Dinger leaves the band to form NEU! with Michael
Rother. "Kraftwerk 2" is released the same year and pursues on the way
defined by the previous album (a lot of experimental guitar parts,
distorted sounds, repetitive rhythms, gradual process.).

In
1973, Florian Schneider decides to put the stress on electronic
percussions and contemporary sound researches. "Ralf & Florian"
marks a turning point in the band's career. The melodies and the sound
used begins more and more pop orientated despite that the recordings
strive to bring to the fore the talent of Schneider and Hutter as
musicians. In 1974, a new start announces the creation of the "Kling
Klang" studio; a small laboratory entirely devoted to advanced
electronic researches and investments in new synthesisers. In the album
"Autobahn" the Mini Moog and others synthesisers supplant definitely the
improvisations and the aleatoric experimentations.

LACRIMOSA

Lacrimosa biography
In November 1990 the world started to get curious
about Tilo Wolff's Projekt LACRIMOSA as his music in form of a tape
"Clamor" reached people in discos and in the Independent and Underground
scene. This melancholic music filled with classical elements and
surrounded by poectic lyrics and intensive singing was something new
which fascinated many and quickly a scene was raising up, which was
nearly already forgotten.

For his first release, the LP "Angst",
Tilo Wolff was grounding his own label HALL OF SERMON for giving
LACRIMOSA the artistic freedom in making music which no other label
could offer him. The music of LACRIMOSA was already that time developing
from album to album without adapting any other music styles or denying
it's roots. Through this progressive development, LACRIMOSA was
challenging the tolerance of a widespread audience of the diverse
facetts of the alternative Musicscene in the whole world.

LACRIMOSA's
music had been coloured by several guest musicians, but in the
beginning of 1994, Anne Nurmi joined the former soloproject to become a
permanent member. Anne Nurmi, who was the keyboarder, singer and one of
the grounders of the finnish band Two Witches, was setting new musical
accents with her singing and composing.

The following releases
were managing to combine the hardness of Metal and Hard Rock without
loosing the most obvious love for classical music. With this
revolutionary new sound, Gothic Metal was born, which more and more
bands were quickly adapting.

LAKE OF TEARS

Progressive Metal • Sweden

Lake Of Tears biography
LAKE OF TEARS is a progressive metal band from Boras, Sweden formed in
1992 when Daniel Brennare (vocals, guitar), Jonas Eriksson (guitar) and
Michael Larsson (bass) left the death metal band they were playing in
and joined Johan Oudhuis (drums). They recorded a demo in early 1993,
which caught the attention of Black Mark Productions who signed the band
soon after.

In 1994, the band released their debut album
"Greater Art" followed quickly by their second album "Headstones" the
following year.

The band toured Europe and lost guitarist Jonas
Eriksson in the summer of 1996. They released their third studio album
"A Crimson Cosmos" in 1997 and hired a new guitarist Ulrik Lindblom.

They
toured relentlessly until 1999, when they recorded their fourth studio
album "Forever Autumn." This album was more progressive than their
predecessors and they hired full time keyboardist Christian Saarinen.

The band broke up shortly after the release of their fourth album.

To
honor their contract with Black Mark Productions, the band recorded and
released their fifth studio album "The Neonai" in 2002 with Daniel
Brennare ensuring the final production of the release by himself.

In
2003, band leader Daniel Brennare and his two long standing friends,
Mikael Larsson and Johan Oudhuis decided to rekindle the band after a
joint rehearsal in the summer of 2003.

With a new life into the
band they carefully choose their new label Noise Records and released
their sixth studio album "Black Brick Road" in 2004 with the help of
guest musicians Magnus Sahlgren (lead guitar), Dan Helgeson (organ),
Stina Rebelius (vocals), Ulrika Silver (vocals) and Jorgen Cremonese
(guitar). Magnus Sahlgren (guitar) became a full time member.

In 2007, the band released their seventh studio album "Moons and Mushrooms" on Dockyard1.

GREG LAKE

Greg Lake biography
Perhaps best known for his popular seasonal hit 'I
Believe In Father Christmas', GREG LAKE has made a signficant impact on
the prog world by being in two of the most important bands of the genre:
King Crimson and ELP. Coming from Bournemouth (on the south coast of
England) he shared the same guitar teacher with Robert Fripp. It was
Fripp though that first dipped his toes into the prog world with 'The
Cheerful Insanity Of Giles,Giles and Fripp' (1968) an album considered
too experimental by the record company who wanted something more
mainstream. Fripp set out to form a band that could satisfy this
requirement and he recruited Ian MacDonald (who importantly owned a
Mellotron) plus, of course, GREG LAKE.
So King Crimson came into
being, their amazing debut album 'In The Court Of The Cimson King'
featuring LAKE's silky smooth vocals helping the album to be the most
important statement of the progressive rock movement to date. Whilst
touring with Crimson in 1969, LAKE met Keith Emerson, keyboard player in
The Nice who, as a band, were arguably as important as King Crimson in
the early development of progressive rock. They became firm friends and
perhaps it was inevitable they would form a band together.Eventually
recruiting young drumming prodigy Carl Palmer (apparently LAKE rang him
up and said something like ''If you don't join this band you are not
only damaging yourself but you are harming me as well..and that's
heavy!!), a triumphant official debut performance at the massive Isle
Of Wight Festival followed in 1970. Later in the year ELP's self titled
album was released, proudly featuring a song LAKE had written as a
child, 'Lucky Man'.Keith Emerson provided a 'progressive' Moog solo that
still marks this fine track as a classic. ELP were up and running! o stiti, nu ?

LEVIATHAN

Leviathan biography
LEVIATHAN are a classic progressive metal band, whose style derives from
bands such as DREAM THEATER, early QUEENSRYCHE, and later-period FATES
WARNING. The band's basic sound is pretty streamlined power/prog metal
with a bit of technicality. The vocal style is operatic which improves
on each disc. The strongest element of the bands sound is the emotion
that they convey with the music.

Their albums have consistently
garnered favorable reviews but they have yet to move up to the major
league of progressive metal bands. Their last two discs (Riddles..."
& Scoring The Chapters") are top notch albums. It will be surely
appreciated both by the fans of this kind of music, and by the younger
people searching for the heavy prog roots.

LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT

Progressive Metal • United States

Liquid Tension Experiment biography
Liquid Tension Experiment had its genesis still in
the year of 1996, when Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy was contected
by Peter Morticelli (head of the label Magna Carta) and Mike Varney
(vice president of the label Magna Carta) and was asked to, according to
Portnoy, try and "put together a couple of Super Groups (for the lack
of a better term!)",. In spite of declining the offer at first, he
eventually agreed to assemble a super ensemble.

Many were the
attempts to put the group together through most of 1997, but most of
them failed due to one pivotal problem: they were lacking a member. Mike
was able to recruit a bass player, who was Tony Levin, of King Crimson
and Peter Gabriel's band fame, and a keyboard player, who was Jordan
Rudess, which was playing with the jazz fusion group Dixie Dregs at the
time, but there was still a guitarist missing. Every guitarist that was
originally invited to be part of the group refused the offer due to
conflicting schedules.

Finally, in the spring of 1997, Mike
decided to invite John Petrucci, Dream Theater guitarist, to join Liquid
Tension Experiment and, with his acceptance, the group was finally
complete and ready to record their first album, the self titled Liquid
Tension Experiment.

The idea, or the concept, of that album was
to fully write, rehearse and record the whole thing in a week, and so it
was done: from September 20 to September 25 of 1997 the whole process
was successfully done and the album was released in the next year, in
March of 1998.

The members of the band and Magna Carta were so
satisfied with the results of the first endeavor that they decided to
record yet another album. In late 1998 the band regrouped and in the
span of two months wrote, rehearsed and recorded what would be their
second album, entitled Liquid Tension Experiment 2. This time, just like
with Liquid Tension's first album, it was released on the following
year.

Nearly ten years after the disbandment of the Liquid
Tension Experiment, in late 2007, a third studio album was released with
new band material. The release entitled Liquid Trio Experiment had jam
tracks from the band without John Petrucci, who was with his wife at the
hospital expecting his child to be born at the time. Unlike the two
previous studio albums, Liquid Trio Experiment was mostly ill received
by critics and fans alike.

Tony MacAlpine biography
TONY MACALPINE is an American virtuoso guitarist and keyboardist.
Before he began to play guitar, TONY MACALPINE had formal music training in playing classical violin and piano.
He
cites Romantic era composer and piano virtuoso Chopin as one of his
biggest influences and as a tribute TONY MACALPINE played his own
interpretations of Chopin pieces on many of his solo albums.
TONY
MACALPINE is widely regarded as a big influence to the neo-classical
metal genre of the 80s, helping the genre to develop, but often adding
in blues and jazz fusion elements in too and the result was some of the
earlier known prog metal made.
His first two albums, "Edge Of
Insanity" and "Maximum Security" are the two prime examples of his great
contribution to the 1980s metal scene.
He also appears on other
influential 80s instrumental rock/neo classical metal albums as a
keyboardist, such as Vinnie Moore's "Mind's Eye" and Joey Tafolla's "Out
of the Sun".
During the 90s, he worked again with Vinnie and also worked with Ukrainian-American composer and piano virtuoso.
Since
2000, he worked with the fusion-metal band Planet X, featuring on their
first two studio albums and a live album and played guitar and
keyboards in Steve Vai's touring band, The Breed, up until 2006 when he
left to pursue other projects.

WHY THIS ARTIST SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE ARCHIVES:
TONY
MACALPINE has been part of the progressive metal world since the 1980s
and has been influential on the genre and it's development.

MAGMA

Zeuhl • France

Magma biography
Led by classically-trained drummer Christian VANDER, MAGMA helped to
create a whole genre of music (nicknamed "Zeuhl" after the unique MAGMA
language). Their music combined elements of jazz, opera, minimalism and
20th century classical music, yet emotionally rich and undeniably
powerful sound that eventually brought on the ZEUHL sub-genre of
progressive rock. Incredible and intense! This band was as a real source
for many French musicians. Some players were more influential than
others, but with each change in personnel came a slight change in the
sound of the band.

MAGMA is one of the most influential European
bands since the early 70's and has recorded not a good record but
several FANTASTIC albums. They are a concept band whose albums explain
the origins and development of the new civilization on Kobaia, and their
interactions with the people of EARTH and other planets. For beginners,
I'd say start with "Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh" (MDK for short)
(1973), the magnificent "Köhntarkösz" (1974), and "Live/Hhai" (1975).
MDK features all the hallmarks for which MAGMA are recognized. "Udu
Wudu" (1977) is more for the MAGMA fans while the first albums are more
jazzy. "Attahk" (1978) is another one of the band's more accessible
albums, more song orientated with more pronounced jazz and rock
influences. After that, the albums from "Attahk" on are something of a
step down. Overall MAGMA produced some of the most important and
groundbreaking music of the decade.

MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA

Jazz Rock/Fusion • Multi-National

Mahavishnu Orchestra biography
Led by the incomparable guitar of John MCLAUGHLIN, The MAHAVISHNU
ORCHESTRA combined jazz, rock, and eastern influences into a fiery,
dynamic tour de force. They recorded three intense albums during
1971-1973 and then the personnel changed completely for the second
version of the group. A reformation of the group in 1974 brought
Jean-Luc PONTY on board to play violin, along with a host of new
supporting musicians.

Their first two albums are absolute
masterpieces of the genre. A stunning achievement and surely one of the
greatest albums ever made, "The Inner Mounting Flame" defies
categorization as it juxtaposes rock, jazz, classical, Indian, and
Celtic influences in a way that is at once aggressive and subtle just
one short year after Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew" milestone album. "Birds
of Fire" was the culmination of a solid year opening gigs for the likes
of EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER, and YES. The incredible "Visions Of The
Emerald Beyond" is the essential album from the second formation. The
focus is the interplay between guitar and violin and it is complex and
interwined.

Mahavishnu Project biography
MAHAVISHNU PROJECT

Back in 1971, when
guitar-god JOHN MCLAUGHLIN left MILES DAVIS and (TONY WILLIAMS'
LIFETIME) to form the groundbreaking MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA, he was the
first to combine the fire of HENDRIX-drenched rock with the groove of
COLTRANE's modal jazz & the ethereal Indian ragas of RAVI SHANKAR.
The critics called it "jazz rock" (of course it was much more) and the
result was nothing less than a musical revolution. The MAHAVISHNU
ORCHESTRA has since been cited as a major influence on everyone from
KING CRIMSON to PHISH to the MARS VOLTA, and was in many ways one of the
first electric jam bands. Not surprisingly however, the music of the
MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA hasn't gone on to be covered and re-interpreted by
the many bands it has affected, largely due to its extreme technical
demands. That is, until now.

The MAHAVISHNU PROJECT launches
directly from where the original band abruptly left off. In 2001, this
incendiary unit from New York City began performing their unique
renditions of music from classic MAHAVISHNU discs such as "Birds of
Fire", "Inner Mounting Flame", "Between Nothingness & Eternity" and
"Visions of the Emerald Beyond", while remaining true to the cutting
edge improvs of the original band, and to MCLAUGHLIN's stunning
compositions. Their take on the music must be quite special, as they
have received the seal of approval from Maestro MCLAUGHLIN himself!

The
MAHAVISHNU PROJECT is led by extraordinary drummer/composer GREGG
BENDIAN, widely known for his work with PAT METHENY, ORNETTE COLEMAN
& JOHN ZORN. BENDIAN has received rave reviews for his and NELS
CLINE's "Interstellar Space Revisited: The Music of John Coltrane"
(Atavistic), his band INTERZONE's "Requiem for Jack Kirby" (Atavistic,
2001) and his sterling drum and vibes work on the long-awaited "We Saw A

ROLLO HORN. BENDIAN's talents are uniquely suited to the daunting
challenge of another shining icon of creative music the MAHAVISHNU

As MANFRED MANN (the 60's R & B group) was dwindling down, their

by SOLAR FIRE they had become an Art-rock band.

But MMEB will
always be remembered for their arrangements of SPRINGSTEEN and DYLAN

South Africa, where he could not come back. MMEB is still touring
nowadays.

MANOGURGEIL

Jazz Rock/Fusion • Finland

Manogurgeil biography
'Manogurgeil' is an outfit of five young musicians from Helsinki,
Finland. The band's distinctive sound stems from the members' Jazz,
Progressive, Rock, Pop and Funk influences.
The first seeds of the
band were sown in early 2002 when Ville Koivula (bass), Hannu Kuosmanen
(keyboards) and Erno Palonheimo (keyboards) were jamming in the living
room of their commune. Hannu had played bass before, but soon got into
Erno's keyboard collection while Ville took over the bass. Some months
later, the commune moved away from the metropolitan area to a house with
a garage that allowed drummer Janne Löppönen to join the band. At this
stage, the band was a trio formed by Ville, Hannu and Janne.
Occasionally, friends who were known to play an instrument were invited
to join, including the future guitarist Juho Sammalkorpi. In January
2003 Ville and Erno bumped into Ville Paukkonen, whom they had
occasionally met in local gigs a few times before. It turned out that
Ville P. was also a keyboard player with similar tastes and influences
as the others, so he came along to the garage jams and soon joined the
band as the second keyboardist. However, Janne was beginning to lose
interest and the rehearsals were becoming quite sporadic towards the
summer. He then participated in recording a rough demo that would also
be used for recruiting a new drummer. As a temporary stand-in, Esko
Niiranen joined the band for a couple of weeks in September and played
the drums in 'Manogurgeil's' first public gig at the Factory club in
Helsinki. During several following gigs, the drum kit was manned by
professional drummer J. Salonen. However, he ultimately chose to focus
on his career with Pop star Irina's backing band. The drummer problem
was solved in May 2004 when, after an extensive search, Perttu Lindberg
manned the kit. Guitarist Juho Sammalkorpi joined late in that year,
finally completing the lineup. In 2007 ' Manogurgeil' released their
debut album. "Unirytmejä" (Circadian Rhythms).

MARILLION

Neo-Prog • United Kingdom

megatrupa !
Marillion biography
MARILLION, taking their name from Tolkien's "The Silmarillion", are the
well known band that invented the "New Wave of Progressive Rock". Their
sound is similar to GENESIS '72 to '82 or thereabouts, with PINK FLOYD
and YES influences. The line-up, by this time, comprised Fish (his real
name, Derek Dick, was worse; vocals), Mark Kelly (keyboards), Steve
Rothery (guitar), Ian Mosley (drums) and Peter Trewavas (bass).

MARILLION - FISH (1982 - 1988)
The
music is directed around the poetic and sometimes fantasy lyrics of the
lead singer Fish, who sounds very much like Peter Gabriel. The band got
their best successes, both artistically, progressively and
commercially. "Script For A Jester's Tear" showed influences from many
of the great 70's progressive bands. The second studio album "Fugazi"
followed in the next year. The third studio album, "Misplaced Chilhood",
was a true concept album and placed MARILLION among the greats.
MARILLION's fourth album "Clutching At Straws" was to be "old"
MARILLION's farewell to the world. The album, dealing with the problems
of drug addiction and alcoholism, was the final album to be made with
Fish as front man and lyricist. Fish left the band in 1988 to pursue a
solo career.

MARILLION - HOGARTH (1989 - today)
Their new
sound seems more geared for radio play, although they still have an air
of depression in the music. "Season's End" was issued in 1989 with a new
singer, a lot less inspired by Peter Gabriel, Steve HOGARTH. Their
album "Brave", considered one of the modern masterpieces of progressive
rock, is a concept piece about a young girl that contemplates suicide on
a bridge. This daring concept album is a spectacular exercise in
multi-layered music.

super album !

THE MARS VOLTA

Heavy Prog • United States

The Mars Volta biography
Formed in 2001 after the demise of hard-rock outfit AT THE DRIVE-IN, THE
MARS VOLTA was put together by ex-AT THE DRIVE-IN members Cedric Bixler
(vocals) and Omar Rodriguez (guitar). Those two then recruited Juan
Alderete on bass, Ikey Owens on keyboard, and Jon Theodore on drums, as
well as Jeremy Ward, who contributed sound effects. While other ex-AT
THE DRIVE-IN members continued on the path of their predecessor with
punk/emo band SPARTA, THE MARS VOLTA expanded the sound that they had
previously forged, venturing often into extended explosions of free jazz
and psychedelic jamming throughout their songs. That said, they still
stayed true to their roots as a hard rock band, and while they are
listed as art-rock, they could fit under several different genres. Their
debut was 2002's "Tremulant" EP, but their reputation was built over
their staggering live shows. The group received recognition opening for
the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, as bassist Flea proclaimed them to be the
best opener he'd ever had. However, not all was well. Ward died from a
drug overdose on May 25th, 2003. The band continued on without him
though, and their first full-length album "De-Loused in the Comatorium"
was released two months later. This brooding record is a concept album
about the band's friend Julio Venegas, who went into a coma and
experienced amazing things. However, he then snapped out and couldn't
take the return to reality, proceeding to take his own life.

At
this point the band has three studio albums out and it's certainly worth
checking out. However, if you aren't a fan of louder music, steer clear
of them. They may have evolved beyond AT THE DRIVE-IN, but they still
show hints of that hardcore/punk style that they had previously
mastered, and this may bother some people. The vocals are also a bit
over the top, and could easily scare some people off. They make some
very good music though, and it should appeal to most prog fans.

o muzica intensa si solicitanta...

MEKONG DELTA

Tech/Extreme Prog Metal • Germany

Mekong Delta biography
The story began in 1985 when sound-engineer and
label-owner (Aaarrg-records) Ralph Hubert started a studio project with
German metal musicians. MEKONG DELTA emerged on the underground metal
scene as a misterious band; the members - Jörg Michael (drums), Frank
Fricke (guitar), Reiner Kelch (guitar), Wolfgang Borgmann (vocals) and
Ralph Hubert (bass) - were under contract to other bands at different
labels, therefore they could not reveal their true identities. The first
demo recorded with Jochen Schröder (guitar) and Peavy Wagner (bass)
(both were the founding members of RAGE), but Schröder did not fit in
and was replaced by the LIVING DEATH guitarists Fricke and Kelch. After
Peavy's departure, Ralph takes the bass guitar himself. As the leader of
the band, he did all the telephone interviews using the pseudonym Björn
Eklund.

After finishing the second album "The Music of Erich
Zann" Reiner left and was replaced by Uwe Baltrusch. Few years later
Fricke and Borgmann also left the band. Borgmann was replaced by the
merican Doug Lee, former singer of Siren. These men finished recording
the album "Dances of Death (and Other Walking Shadows)" in 1990. Before
the release of the album their true names were revealed and by 1990 all
but Jörg Michael were using their true names. After recording that
album, Michael left the band and was replaced by Swiss drummer Peter
Haas. They also started touring across Europe, and on the 12th of
October 1991 they played their first gig in Holland (There was not any
live performance in the early days because of the hiding). The "Live at
an Exhibition" album was recorded a day later in Germany.

The
release of "Kaleidoscope" could be seen as one of their best efforts.
"Kaleidoscope" also contains a cover version of Genesis song 'Dance on a
Volcano'. One year later "Classics" was released, which is a
compilation, a collection of all classical pieces Ralph has ever
arranged for the band. Without any commercial success MEKONG DELTA still
had not given up hope and continued their work with the release of
"Visions Fugitives" and "Pictures at an Exhibition", which was
originally composed by Modest Mussorgsky. This record was also the
swansong of this underrated band.

The music of MEKONG DELTA can
be described as German thrash with strong progressive (WATCHTOWER) and
classical (MUSSORGSY, KHATCHATURIAN) infuences.

de savurat, metal meets clasics.

MESHUGGAH

Tech/Extreme Prog Metal • Sweden

Meshuggah biography
MESHUGGAH are a swedish heavy metal band who formed in the late 80's.
They have had a few line-up changes over the years but their current
line-up consists of Mårten Hagström, Fredrik Thordendal, Jens Kidman and
Tomas Haake.

MESHUGGAH stand out from other heavy metal bands by
having quite unique complexities that make their riffs and styles extra
interesting. Blending styles of thrash in their early works, they have
gone on to write more complex and challenging pieces album by album,
taking a much more progressive feel to their music album by album.
MESHUGGAH are famous for their strong use of unusual time signatures,
often relating to jazz complexities. This makes their thundering riffs
take a much more challenging and progressive form.

MESHUGGAH are
quite unlike any other metal bands on this forum and are certainly an
interesting pick of the prog metal genre. Sometimes described as "Math
Metal", MESHUGGAH will go down well with fans of heavier DREAM THEATER
tracks and other bands like TOOL for their unique complexities.
MESHUGGAH's highest rated albums are "Destroy Erase Improve" and "Catch
33". One of their proggiest works is the 21 minute epic, "I" which is on
a separate EP and is definetly worth checking out as it is a brilliant
example of their odd shifts in time signatures and shows off their
complex structures really well.

PAT METHENY

Jazz Rock/Fusion • United States

Pat Metheny biography
PAT METHENY, in and out of the PAT METHENY BAND, has
been touring for more than 30 years, averaging 200 concerts a year. He
is one of the top ten jazz rock guitarists, having in part
re-established this genre (along side the likes of ALLAN HOLDSWORTH - an
artist METHENY greatly admires), as one which is original and continues
to create dynamic and cutting edge music, (rather the smooth jazz that
the genre of fusion was in danger of becoming at the end of the 70's).
He has written 200+ pieces and continues to push musical limits in both
composing and performing. He has for several decades been one of the
best selling jazz musicians in the world. PAT (Patrick Bruce)
METHENY was born in Lee's Summit. Missouri in the USA on the 12th August
1954. He started guitar at the age of 13, (his brother Mike was already
a trumpeter). His musical interests ranged from the Beatles to
unusually the music of ORNETTE COLEMAN. His ability on the instrument
advanced rapidly and was such that he was teaching the instrument both
at University of Miami (colleague with JACO PASTORIUS) and Berklee,
whilst still in his teens. He made his record debut with PASTORIUS, PAUL
BLEY and BRUCE DITMOUS in 1974. One of the visiting professors at
Berkee, vibraphonist GARY BURTON (also one of the earlier American
explorers into jazz rock), recruited METHENY for the GARY BURTON Quartet
(sometimes QUINTET) for defining period between 1974 to 77, recording
several albums for the German jazz label ECM. During this period, in
1975 METHENY recorded the first album under his own name, 'Bright Size
Life' (released 1976, again with PASTORIUS now at the height on his
fame, and drummer BOB MOSES). In 1977 'Watercolors' was recorded with
LYLE MAYS playing keyboards. In 1978 METHENY formed the PAT METHENY
GROUP with LYLE MAYS (keyboards), MARK EGAN (electric bass) and DANNY
GOTTLIEB (drums).

MIND'S EYE

Progressive Metal • Sweden

Mind's Eye biography
MIND's EYE is a progressive band with a strong sense of melody. Although
making their own blend of heavy metal and progressive rock you can
still hear influences from bands like: RUSH, YES, ENCHANT and GENESIS.
The vocals, the acid guitar, the various rhythm changes and climates
with some spacy and typically German crescendos.

"A Work of Art"
is a good album by a band that has the ability to make something
extremely spectacular. Buy this album and watch for this band's next
"work of art". A must for everyone into classy progressive melodic rock
like VANDEN PLAS, ENCHANT, SHADOW GALLERY, YES, RUSH...

MONO

Post Rock/Math rock • Japan

Mono biography
The Japanese Mogwai? Well, not quite, but one might get the impression
if not paying enough attention to the music. Formed in Tokyo (Japan)
back in 1999, Mono are undoubtedly one of the most popular
representatives of the post-rock genre. However, do not go expecting to
hear anything remotely similar to the more "avant-garde" side of
post-rock (GY!BE, A Silver Mt. Zion etc.) Mono's approach is
considerably more melodic, and the compositions are structurally much
simpler. This guitar-lead ensemble mostly relies on creating very
emotionally charged compositions, occasionally using huge build-ups with
their massive distorted guitar riffs ("wall of noise") in a similar way
to their Scottish counterparts Mogwai. Their approach is hardly the
most original one, but it does sound good, and I guess that's all that
really matters, right? Recommended for fans of the genre.
