TALITHA QUMI

Prog Folk • Romania

Talitha Qumi biography
Talitha Qumi (1992-1995) are a Prog Folk band which formed in 1992 in
Cluj, Romania. The name means Maiden Arise in Aramaic. Like the
Romanian Prog Folk band Phoenix before them, they take inspiration from
folklore and use a number of traditional instruments and vocal
techniques to create their own blend of experimental atmospheric folk
music. The vocals consist of incantations and recitals in Romanian and
Latin. Various symphonic and psychedelic influences may also be
detected in their music.

Their only album to be released, Despre
Cuvinte was recorded and released in 1996 by Soft Records and
re-released in 2005. The band has ceased to be active since the
recording of this album. Guitarist and vocalist Eugen Nutescu later
went on to join the Progressive / Alternative rock band Kumm.

Musicians:
Eugen Nutescu - electric and acoustic guitar, mandolin, vocals
Şerban Ursachi - piano, organ, flute, vocals
Stefan Paskucz - bass guitar, vocals
Dragoş Andriana - drums, percussion, vocals

TALK TALK

Crossover Prog • United Kingdom

Talk Talk biography
Formed in 1981 by muti-instrumentalist Mark Hollis,
TALK TALK began as a fairly typical 80s synth pop band. Joined by
producer and keyboardist Tim Friese-Greene in 1983, the band began to
experiment with jazz and classical influences, at times evoking
late-60's psychedelic explorers CAN and PINK FLOYD. With a cut-and-paste
style of production, Hollis and Friese-Green utilized recordings of
many and diverse guest musicians to create atmospheric compositions of
startling uniqueness. By the early 90s, the band's internal pressures
and total lack of record company support (added to their refusal to do
interviews, make videos, or even tour regularly) led Hollis to venture
out on his own, where he continues to explore music in its most abstract
and minimalist forms.

Although such releases as 1982's "The
Party's Over" and 1984's "It's My Life" generated significant interest
and some success, TALK TALK began to evolve past the synth-pop with "The
Colour of Spring" in 1986, which contained tantalizing tastes of what
was to come. The defining sound finally emerged on their subsequent two
releases, "Spirit of Eden" (1988) and "Laughing Stock" (1991). These
albums are truly unique statements; seemingly free-form and abstract,
the songs reveal themselves to be delicately constructed soundscapes
where each note - or even each moment of silence - is necessary and
powerfully emotional. Instruments and vocals weave in and out of the
mix, sometimes contributing only one quiet sound before disappearing,
sometimes building to a wrenching climax.

Although by no means
standard prog-rock fare, TALK TALK (at their best) shares with the
greats of the genre an attitude of instrumental exploration and
willingness to abandon traditional structures. Those looking for flights
of technical dexterity a la Wakeman, McLaughlin, Emerson et cetera will
be disappointed, but those who prize the quieter, shifting abstract
textures of "Starless"-era KING CRIMSON may feel right at home. Seldom
has music been as artistic and conceptual and yet at the same time so
heartfelt and real. No matter what your musical preferences, the last
two albums are unlike anything else ever recorded and are highly
recommended to anyone who values musical exploration.

TANGERINE DREAM

Progressive Electronic • Germany

Tangerine Dream biography
Edgar Froese
first formed The Ones in 1965. After several private concerts (notably
at Salvador Dali's house), the band changes its name for Tangerine
Dream.
After a first release featuring Klaus Schulze and Conrad Schnitzler
"Electronic Meditation" (1969) Tangerine Dream will abandon aleatoric
experimentations to concentrate on radical cosmic synth atmospheres.
"Alpha Centauri" (1971) will be a landmark of the band's first
explorations in electronic realms. Without a regular pulse but just with
organ chords, a few manipulated guitar lines and synthesisers effects,
"Alpha Centauri" remains an absolute epic and classic cosmic adventure.
The following year, the contemplative "Zeit" represents a milestone, an
abstract & timeless musical world. "Atem" (1973) whose line up
(Froese / Franke / Baumann) will participate to TD's classic years until 1977 is an obscure and mind-blowing electronic symphony.

In
1973 start TD's classic & popular Virgin years. The captivating
"Phaedra" contributes to the trademark sound of TD, with Moog arpeggio,
pulsating sequencer patterns and powerful synthesisers sounds. An all
time classic that launched the band's notoriety and career outside of
Germany. Next to "Phaedra", "Rubycon", the live "Ricochet" and
"Stratosfear" deliver ethereal and complex rhythmical soundscapes. In
1977, the band released the soundtrack of "Sorcerer" (directed by
William Friedkin). A dark, moody atmospheric album (with a rather
similar material used in previous albums). "Sorcerer" is also the last
studio work with the classic TD line up. The vocalist Steve Joliffe and
the drummer Klaus Krieger were employed for Paul Baumann's replacement
and record "Cyclone". Disconcerted, the album is badly seen by the
public and the critic despite that it introduced many interesting
elements to TD's music. In 1979, almost in duet, Edgar Froese and Chris
Franke record "Force Majeure".

In the 80s, TANGERINE DREAM knew a
long and fruitful career in writing music for screen. The departure of
Chris Franke in 1988 marks momentarily a hard blow to the band's musical
creativity. During the 90s, TD published numerous live albums,
soundtracks. Edgar Froese's son, Jerome integrates the band. They
release several albums as "Melrose", "Rockoon"...

THERION

Progressive Metal • Sweden

Therion biography
: : : From Death Metal to Progressive Gothic Symphonic Metal : : :
This
is one of the best metal bands ever and also happen to originate from
Sweden Smile. In 1987 Christofer Johnsson formed a band called BLITZKRIEG.
The band later changed their name to MEGATHERION and finally THERION and
managed to get a record deal with the German metal label Nuclear Blast.
Over the years the band has released nine full-length albums and the
members of the band has changed several times. The true genius behind it
all and undoubtedly the most important member of the band is Christofer
himself - he writes all the music, plays guitar, hammond organ and
keyboards as well as used to do the vocals. There aren't many musicians
with the skill of this man in the world today but hopefully there will
be more bands like THERION to erupt from this planet in the future. The
first four albums are musically in death metal style but the band still
developed all the time, adding new elements to their music for each new
release - clean male vocals, arabic folk music, classic music and
industrial. Their fifth album called "Theli" was very different from
their first ones - Christofer finally had the budget to do the kind of
album he had been dreaming of doing for years but didn't have the
possibility to record it until now.

THERION had now become an
operatic and symphonic metal band - mixing melodic IRON MAIDEN
influenced metal with classical music composed by Christofer himself and
with clear male and female choirs doing much of the vocals together
with Christofer Johnson. You can hear the beginning of this development
already on the "Lepaca Kliffoth" album but the difference in quality if
you compare this with "Theli" is unbelievable. Since then they have
continued in the same direction of opera metal. On these later albums
Christofer has hired world class session musicians to play all kinds of
orchestral instruments - violin, fluite, cello and so on - as well as
female and male choirs to do the opera-like vocals. In 1997 they
released a 10-year aniversary album called "A'arab Zaraq Lucid
Dreaming", containing old non-released material, a few covers and a
sound-track (pure classic music) Christofer did for an art-movie.

TOOL

Experimental/Post Metal • United States

Tool biography
TOOL formed in 1990 with Maynard James Keenan (vocals), Adam Jones
(guitar), Paul D'amour (bass) and Danny Carey (drums). TOOL are well
known for there disturbing lyrics and videos. Singer Maynard James
Keenan has collaborated with bands such as NINE INCH NAILS, RAGE AGAINST
THE MACHINE and provides vocals for A PERFECT CIRCLE. The singer is
well known for having a supernatural ability to hold long notes with his
voice. Adam Jones is a very skilled guitarist who also creates the
bands videos and artwork. He was also chosen to be on the effects team
for Terminator 2. The band often spend quite a few years writing and
recording their albums in order to make them perfect and there is often a
gap of 5 years between each studio album but they are always
masterpieces. The band are currently writing new material. Paul D'amour
left the band after the second album "Undertow" and was replaced by
British bassist Justin Chancellor.

The band's first full length
album was 1993's "Undertow" which is a favourite amongst metal fans but
also shows an evolving progressive sound, similar to that of DREAM
THEATER. TOOL often experiment with lengthy songs, guitar effects and
have excellent unique riffs and solo's backed up by Keenan's amazing
voice that can stretch long notes. Three years later the follow up
"Aenima" was released, a masterpiece which received excellent reviews
and was a clear step up from the previous album. This includes a mixture
of anger fuelled songs and emotional, tortured songs. The album also
settled for a more progressive sound and contained many lengthy pieces.

2001
saw the bands masterpiece, "Lateralus". It was almost impossible to
better the last album but they pulled it off. This lengthy album showed
off the bands lyrical and musical skills to the maximum. One of the best
prog rock albums I've ever heard. It is nice to see that TOOL are still
keeping the genre going strong. I urge fans of DREAM THEATER, PINK
FLOYD and THE MARS VOLTA to check this band out as they feel right at
home listening to their albums.

DEVIN TOWNSEND

Experimental/Post Metal • Canada

Devin Townsend biography
DEVIN TOWNSEND, possibly more widely known as the
frontman for the extreme metal act STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, began creating
solo albums in 1997.

Sometimes referred to as the 'Mad Scientist
of Metal', TOWNSEND produces a wide variety of music. This ranges from
soft ambience designed, as he has stated, to put the listener to sleep,
to high levels of thrash and extreme metal reminiscent of SYL.
His
works often feature a 'wall of sound', built by adding many layers of
guitars and keyboards that are playing in unison or harmony. The end
result is a number of carefully produced and mixed albums that favor
high-end sound systems.

His first solo album, 'Ocean Machine:
Biomech' (1997), was actually originally simply titled 'Biomech' and the
band project labeled OCEAN MACHINE. However, on subsequent releases in
most countries, the one-shot band name was incorporated into the title,
and TOWNSEND's name was affixed to the record. Next came his first solo
album proper, 1998's 'Infinity'. However, diagnosed with bipolar
disorder and suffering with severe depression, TOWNSEND left the album
only partly finished, filling in the song gaps with other demos.
Rebounding from this struggle, he wrote 'Physicist' in 2000, creating a
sort of pop-metal release featuring the members of his band STRAPPING
YOUNG LAD. His 2001 project, 'Terria', features some of his most
complicated and deep production, incorporating many sounds from nature
into the recording, and stands as one of his most well-known and most
critically acclaimed albums.

His next solo project, THE DEVIN
TOWNSEND BAND, began in 2003 with the release of 'Accelerated
Evolution'. Adding drummer Ryan Van Poederooyen, guitarist Brian
Waddell, bassist Mike Young, and keyboardist Dave Young, TOWNSEND
decided to start releasing albums once more with a full-time band rather
than merely studio musicians. Taking a dramatic turn from the style of
'Terria', TOWNSEND adopted a much more band-oriented feel, reducing the
amount of atmosphere and increasing the level of accessibility of the
music.

Van Der Graaf Generator biography
If there is a band who never got worldwide recognition, but belongs on
the same platform occupied by GENESIS, YES, FLOYD, GENTLE GIANT and ELP,
this band is VDGG! Frontman Peter Hammill holds one of the most
beautiful voices ever heard, with an infinite range of dynamics added to
it, giving an odd atmosphere to the usual thoughful lyrics. Switching
from sweet to aggressive moods, the vocals outstand upon a peculiar
organ oriented music conducted by the geniality of Hugh Banton, yet
counterpointed by beautiful saxes and other wind instruments.

The
band stayed innactive for a couple of years in the middle 70's but came
back, maybe to deliver their best phase, with the albums "Still Life",
"Godbluff", and "Quiet Zone". Some other masterpieces belong on the
first period, though: The incomparable album "H to He' Who Am The Only
One", which counts with the participation of the master Robert Fripp on
the guitars, and also the legendary album "Pawn Hearts". Definitely a
must, essential prog rock!

VANDEN PLAS is a band which incorporates elements of progressive and pop

interesting band which started out life as a modern hair metal band.
However, the band really cleaned up their act for their most recent
albums which take their cue more from DREAM THEATER. Fans in France and
Japan have already pushed the band to much success and after half a
dozen albums it is time for the band to resign itself to those countries
or make a push for itself elsewhere as well.

VOIVOD

Tech/Extreme Prog Metal • Canada

Voivod biography
Originally from Quebec, Canada, VOIVOD formed in 1982 as a fairly
straitforward metal band, favoring the British Metal end of the
spectrum. After a few years their sound took a major turn to the
progressive side, incorporating futuristic imagery and unified concepts
for albums. Two of the four founding members (bassist Jean-Yves
Theriault and vocalist Denis Belanger) left Voivod in the early 90s; the
band continued as a trio in the late 1990s with new member Eric Forrest
handling both vocals and bass guitar. Forrest was badly injured in a
car accident in Germany in 1998, and Voivod briefly disbanded in 2001
before Belanger returned to the band. Since the death in 2005 of Denis
D'Amour (guitars), the current incarnation features two of the four
founding members: Denis Belanger (vocals), and Michel Langevin (drums)
along with Jason Newsted (of Flotsam and Jetsam and Metallica) on bass
guitar. They rank alongside DREAM THEATER as pioneers in the development
of progressive metal in the 80s, but tend to favor a heavier and more
sparse musical style more akin to QUEENSRYCHE. Keyboards (or any other
instruments besides vocals, guitars, drums, and bass) are almost
non-existent in the music.

Their first truly progressive album
was "Killing Technology" (1987), followed by "Dimension: Hatross" (1988)
which is often considered their most innovative work. "Nothingface"
(1989) continued on the science fiction theme, and featured a cover
version of PINK FLOYD's "Astronomy Domine" (They also covered PINK
FLOYD's "The Nile Song" on their 1993 release "The Outer Limits").
"Angel Rat" (1991) is also well-regarded in progressive metal circles.
They continue to record and tour, and have been seen on the Ozzfest
roster a few times.

If you like your music heavy, dark, and cold
with a pronounced sci-fi flavor, VOIVOD is essential. They are worth
checking out for the PINK FLOYD cover songs alone.

ROGER WATERS

Crossover Prog • United Kingdom

Roger Waters biography
Born in Cambridge in 1944, Roger WATERS' musical
career took off when he joined the band PINK FLOYD in 1965 along with
highschool friend Syd BARRETT. After BARRETT's drug problems got him
kicked out of the band, WATERS became the primary creative force, and
thanks to such inspirations as his father who died in World War 2 before
they could ever meet, his strongly left wing political views, and his
ex-bandmate BARRETT, he went on to compose such masterwork concept
albums as "Dark Side of the Moon", "Wish You Were Here", "Animals" and
"The Wall" during his time with the band. However, by 1983 when the band
completed "The Final Cut", he had taken total control, and guitarist
David GILMOUR wasn't going to take it. The two began to fight
feverishly, eventually resulting in WATERS quitting the band thinking
they could never go on without him. They did however, leaving him to his
own solo career. Roger's solo music bares striking resemblance to the
final few albums he did with PINK FLOYD, in that it is very dark and
driven by a concept. Any fans of "The Wall" or "The Final Cut" would do
well to give his solo work a listen.

Roger's solo career
actually dates back to 1970 when he worked with avant-garde composer Ron
Geesin on the soundtrack to the film "The Body". His first real solo
album came in 1985 with the brilliant "Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking"
though. This is an essencial album for fans of his later work with PINK
FLOYD, although some may find it a bit boring and overly personal (it's
based on a dream he had, and touches on almost all of his typical themes
in his lyrics). In 1987 he contributed music to the film "When the Wind
Blows", and also created another concept album in "Radio K.A.O.S.".
This is the least essencial of his solo albums, and is really plagued by
the horrible 80s sound that was dominating music at the time. That
said, it still has some bright spots, and is by no means a weak album.
His next solo work didn't come until 1992's "Amused To Death". Many
consider this his best, and it is without question his most political
album ever. None of these are particularlily accessible, so it couldn't
hurt to just go from the beginning and start with "The Pros and Cons of
Hitch Hiking" if interested in his work, though you can't go wrong with
"Amused To Death" either (that is, if you agree with his strong
political views).

Roger's solo work is recommended, but it's not for everyone

Weather Report biography
Along with MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA, and RETURN TO FOREVER, WEATHER REPORT
can trace its origins to Miles Davis' late 60s line up and breakthrough
recordings "In a Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew". Joe Zawinul and Wayne
Shorter had played together briefly in 1959 with MAYNARD FERGUSON'S
BAND, kept in touch and collaborated again with the aforementioned Davis
projects when they finally decided to form their own band. Leaning
further perhaps towards the jazz end of the meter among their jazz-rock
peers, WEATHER REPORT has made an essential contribution in the legacy
of fusion. Zawinul and Shorter comprised the bulk of creative force for
the early part of their career, cycling through various lineups until
the 1976 recording "Black Market" introduced fusion's most influential
and renowned bass player, Jaco Pastorius.

"Mysterious Traveler"
marks the peak of the pre-Jaco era and is hailed by many as their finest
moment. While other fusion acts relied heavily on the presence of the
ever popular electric guitar, WEATHER REPORT forged ahead without one
and still managed to produce an album that transcended anything done
with jazz based music before. "Black Market" would mark another
transition in their direction that would ultimately be realized in
1977's "Heavy Weather". Standing as their most commercially successful
and critically acclaimed album, "Heavy Weather" boasted a hit single in
Birdland, and leant a production credit to Pastorius, who was now a
driving force in the group.

WEATHER REPORT complete the triangle
that launched fusion in the early seventies, and are highly recommend
for anyone interested in Jazz Fusion.

WISHBONE ASH

Wishbone Ash biography
The history of 'Wishbone Ash' goes back to 1966,
when drummer Steve Upton of the 'Scimitars' joined bassist Martin Turner
and Martin's brother Glen in the band 'The Empty Vessels'. The trio
named themselves 'Tanglewood' and moved to London. Glen Turner quit soon
and was replaced by Ted Turner of Birmingham band 'King Biscuit'. The
line-up was finalised by guitarist Andy Powell (Ex-'Sugarband'). The two
guitarists developed a melodic twin guitar lead style that would become
the trademark of 'Wishbone Ash'.
In 1970 'Wishbone Ash' released
their self titled first record, establishing a mixture of Blues-Rock,
Jazz and English Folk, that the band would elaborate on in their
following records. The production work by Martin Birch was excellent and
the record contains the masterpiece 'Phoenix', that would become a
'Wishbone Ash' live classic and give way to elaborate improvisations on
stage. At the same time the band would start to use lyrics and imagery
drawn from mythology and fantasy. like 'The King will come', 'Throw down
the sword', 'Persephone' & 'Argus'.
In 1971 'Wishbone Ash'
released 'Pilgrimage' and a year later 'Argus', both records bringing
the 'Wishbone Ash' sound to perfection by introducing elaborate vocal
arrangements and sophisticated instrumental passages. Both records are
masterpieces. In 1973 the band released their fourth LP, 'Wishbone
Four', and toured Europe, documented by their live release 'Live Dates'
(1973) and followed by an extended America Tour. In 1974 Ted Turner left
and was replaced by Laurie Wisefield (Ex-Home) who added steel guitar
and banjo to the 'Wishbone Ash' sound on their 1974 release 'There's The
Rub'. During the rest of the seventies the new line-up recorded a
series of good but less interesting records.
In 1987 the original
line-up re-united fora series of records, including the all instrumental
'Nouveau Calls' (1988), before going again though a series of line-up
changes. At the end of the 90's the band found a new stability with
founding guitarist Andy Powell, bass player Bob Skeat and drummer Ray
Weston, joined in 2004 by Finnish guitarist Muddy Manninen.

'Pilgrimage' and 'Argus' are highly recommended.

YES formed in 1968 with Jon ANDERSON (vocals), Chris SQUIRE (bass, vocals), Peter BANKS (guitar, vocals), Tony KAYE (keyboards), and Bill BRUFORD

influential in their heyday, especially notable for the really creative
"Relayer", which included at the time Swiss keyboardist Patrick MORAZ who replaced Rick WAKEMAN

During
the 1970s, YES pioneered the use of synthesizers and sound effects in
modern music. Driven by Jon's artistic vision, they produced such
timeless, symphonic-rock masterworks as "Roundabout," "Close To the

technologies to their limits, selling millions of records and
influencing a generation of digital musicians with classics like "Owner

into the new millennium, the band keeps expanding its boundaries by
using the latest hard-disk recording techniques and, most recently,
working with a full orchestra to create their genre-defying music.

RENAISSANCE

Symphonic Prog • United Kingdom

Renaissance biography
There were two groups under the banner of RENAISSANCE. The first group
included Keith and Jane RELF (vocals) and came from the YARDBIRDS ashes.
The second and better known incarnation produced some of the best music
that I have ever heard. Annie HASLAM's five octave range fit perfectly
with the classical/orchestral rock (lot of piano playing & full
symphony orchestra backup) created by the other members. The quick
description I usually give is they are sort of like the old MOODY BLUES
with a an incredible female vocalist. The soprano voice of Annie and the
piano virtuosity of John TOUT allied to the beauty and refreshing
melodies, the refinement of the arrangements gave their music its
magnificent splendour.

My favorite RENAISSANCE albums are "Ashes
Are Burning" and "Turn of the Cards". I also recommend "Novella",
"Scheherezade and Other Stories" and "A Song for All Seasons" are must
haves. I would add "Live At Carneige Hall" and "King Biscuit Hour Parts 1
and 2" as their 'prime' material. Plenty to fill a day with class,
power and ethereal delights. The best introduction to the band would be
the "Tales of 1001 Nights" compilation, which together contain of the
band's best material from 72 through 80. Also the very first album from
'69 is essential. After 1979, the band moved towards a more pop
direction, like many other bands did in the late 70's.
