BELIEVER

Tech/Extreme Prog Metal • United States

o trupa de pocaiti 'extremi'.
Cool
pe vremea lor, foarte tari.

Believer biography
BELIEVER is a technical/ progressive thrash metal
act formed in Colebrook, Pennsylvania in 1986 by Joey Daub ( Drums) and
Kurt Bachman ( vocals, guitar). They were joined by Howe Kraft ( Bass)
and David Baddorf (guitar) and started playing melodic metal. They
released the demo cassette The Return in 1987. BELIEVER started moving
towards heavier territories after that and began playing technical
thrash metal. An important ingredient in BELIEVER`s music that´s worthy
of notice is Scott Laird´s orchestral string parts which became more and
more integrated into their music with each album. Scott Laird was one
of Bachman´s old high school friend. Many of the progressive elements in
BELIEVER`s music come from his involvement.

Right from the
start the band´s lyrics about philosophy and theology have put them on
the forefront of the Christian metal movement and the aggressive sound
on the debut album Extraction from Mortality (1989) gave them an
identity as one of the most heavy Christian metal bands around.
Extraction from Mortality was released through R.E.X. Records and was
mostly distributed through Christian bookstores. Howe Kraft was replaced
by new bassist Wyatt Robertson in 1990. Roadrunner Records signed
BELIEVER for the release of of their second album Sanity Obscure (1991).
The album was still distributed to the Christian market by R.E.X.
Records though. Sanity Obscure greatly increased the band´s success and
they toured with BOLT THROWER and SACRIFICE.

Wyatt Robertson and
David Baddorf left BELIEVER before the recording of the band´s third
album Dimensions (1993). Jim Winters joined as the new bassist.
Dimensions was distributed in a similar way to how Sanity Obscure was.
R.E.X. Records distributed the album to the Christian market while
Roadrunner Records distributed the album to the secular audience.
Dimensions is generally considered BELIEVER`s most progressive album
with both technical thrash metal, industrial ( samples) and orchestral
string parts as well as some sophisticated lyrics that deal with
philosophical questions about the existence of GOD. The album features a
20 minute three part epic suite called Trilogy of Knowledge.

Crossover Prog • Iceland

Björk biography
Björk Guðmundsdóttir is a singer/songwriter from
Iceland, who has been both loved and hated during her long and
multifaceted career. Writing and recording music since the '70s, she's
become the face of her country and known to the whole world. Her music
varies from new wave punk to experimental pop and even trip-hop and
progressive pop. She has also composed music to movies and musicals and
has also acted in several. There's no doubt Björk is one of the most
influential female artists of modern music scene.

Björk recorded
her first solo album in 1977 when she was only 11 years old. The album
was simply named Björk, a collection of cover songs except for one that
was her own composition. She quickly decided, that children's main
stream was not what she wanted to do. Then soon, in the late '70s punk
and new wave hit Iceland, and Björk as well. She was a singer in a group
called Jam 80, which soon changed into Tappi Tikarrass, a band, that
didn't concentrate on playing but mostly experimenting with instruments.
Having recorded one record, the band broke up and the new
wave
started to fade. Björk performed in a jazz band and recorded some songs
with best known Icelandic musicians. Then she joined a supergroup of
performers called Kukl.

desi doar 'ating' progresivul, sunt prea mari ca sa nu fie amintiti.
Black Sabbath biography
The historic four members of Black Sabbath went to
the same Birmingham secondary school (in the then-semi slums of Aston)
and played in two separate groups (Ozzy and Geezer in one called The
Rare Breed and Tony and Bill in another called Mythology) then joined
forces. Tony Iommi's loss of two fingertip of his fretting hand in an
industrial work-related accident (he is a bit older than the other three
and was working already) had almost convinced him to stop music, but
his foreman offered him a Django Reinhardt album (he was missing two
fingers) and this helped Tony overcoming his handicap by adding a
self-made prostheses on his fingertip, but he had to detune his guitar
to play with it. The now-named EARTH group (a definite improvement on
the previous Polka Tulk Blues Band then the Earth Blues Band) soldiered
on for a few months without much success, although they were playing
12-bar Jazz-Blues-Rock ala Ten Years After, until Toni Iommi accepted an
offer to join JETHRO TULL as their guitarist in replacement for Mick
Abrahams. While Iommi's tenure in Tull lasted a few weeks (his only
testimony is Tull's appearance in the RnR Circus DVD), it gave him an
idea of what kind of efforts were required to get a professional group
together. After his return to Birmingham, he reconvened EARTH and gave
them a tight schedule and work ethics, which made him assume the
leadership of the group as well.

BLACKMORE'S NIGHT

Blackmore's Night biography
The band was co-founded by Richie Blackmore (DEEP PURPLE, RAINBOW) and
his wife Candice Night. They decided to "return to their roots" so to
speak making a comeback for medieval style music. The English folk group
is traditional in its highly structured arrangements but not in its
keyboards and latter-day drum programming. The best and most inventive
music of the last ten years has come from a form rooted deeply in the
past and a new legacy was born. Their songs vary from relaxing ballads
to tunes that would inspire even the most cowardly person to battle.

din nou o trupa asa-zisa cult.

Blue Oyster Cult biography
Hailing from NYC, the members of the band that was
to become BLUE ÖYSTER CULT (BÖC for short) began to come together in the
late 1960s, as a band called "Soft White Underbelly"; then changed into
"Stalk-Forrest Group" in 1968. The name BLUE ÖYSTER CULT probably came
from a 1960s poem written by manager Sandy Pearlman, though there are
different versions of the story. It was part of his poetry, later used
more extensively in their 1988 album "Imaginos". In Pearlman's poetry,
the "Blue Oyster Cult" was a collection of aliens who had to secretly
guide Earth's history. The addition of the umlaut above the vocal "o"
was suggested by either Allen Lanier or Richard Meltzer. Other bands,
such as Motörhead and Queensrÿche, later copied the practice of using
umlauts or diacritic marks in their own band logos. The band's logo is
the alchemical symbol for lead, one of the heaviest of metals. Pearlman
considered this, combined with the heavy and distorted guitar sound of
the band and coined the description "heavy metal" to describe BLUE
ÖYSTER CULT's music.

Nicknamed 'the American Black Sabbath', or
'the thinking man's hard rock band' BÖC released their self-titled debut
album in 1972. Its striking black-and-white cover prominently featured
the now famous hook & cross symbol which the band adopted as their
logo, and one of their most famous tracks to date, "Cities on Flame
(With Rock and Roll)". Their second album, "Tyranny and Mutation", was
built on the first album's basis, but moved towards harder (The Black
side) and richer sounds (The Red side). After that, the band aimed to
make an album with more emotional impact for their third outing. When
"Secret Treaties" was released in 1974, it gained critical acclaim, and
it's still now by many considered their "proggiest" effort of the
Seventies, with such songs as "Astronomy" and "Flaming Telepaths". The
lyrics to "Career of Evil" were written by punk icon Patti Smith, whose
collaboration with the band lasted several years, since she was the
girlfriend of keyboardist Allen Lanier.

BLUT AUS NORD

Experimental/Post Metal • France

Blut Aus Nord biography
BLUT AUS NORD is a French experimental/ avant garde black metal act
formed in 1994 by vocalist/ guitarist VINDSVAL. VINDSVAL started the
black metal act VLAD in 1993 but after recording two demos under this
monicker he opted for a name change. BLUT AUS NORD recorded the first
couple of releases as a one-man act before adding additional members.

The
debut album Ultima Thulée was released in 1995 and a second album
followed in 1996 called Memoria Vetusta I: Fathers of the Icy Age. There
was a five year recording break before the third album release The
Mystical Beast of Rebellion (2003). Up until then BLUT AUS NORD had been
more or less a traditional black metal act but with the fourth studio
album release The Work Which Transforms God (2004), the band started
incorporating experimental and avant garde elements to their sound. The
fifth studio album MoRT (2006) continues the avant garde approach of
it´s predecessor while the band has somewhat returned to more
traditional black metal ( still with some experimental elements) on
their two latest studio albums Odinist - The Destruction of Reason by
Illumination (2007) and Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue with the Stars
(2009).

David Bowie biography
David BOWIE is born David Robert Jones on January 8 1947.
He
started making music in the late fifties (saxophone) and eventually
played in a number of blues/rock bands, releasing his first single Liza
Jane with The King Bees in 1964, he also changed his stage name to David
BOWIE to avoid confusion with Davy Jones from THE MONKEES. BOWIE
demonstrates several traits that single him out as a song-writer of
interest to followers of Progressive music: narrative story-telling
& characterisation, non-standard song structures, musical
eclecticism and a variety of singing styles that have a wide vocal range
and mixture of different tones & timbres to suit individual songs
and stage personas.

Formative years. The Deram Years and Beckenham Art Labs

From
1966 until 1968 David BOWIE was under contract with Decca's Deram
label. In 1967 he released his first album, a psychedelic pop album with
music hall/cabaret overtones that show manager Ken Pitt's desire to
form BOWIE into an 'all-round entertainer' like Tommy Steele and Anthony
Newley when BOWIE's own aims were more Jacques Brel, Bertolt Brecht and
Bob Dylan. The album and singles weren't much of a success, but reveal
BOWIE's ability to craft simplistic sounding songs that were anything
but the whimsical pop they first appear to be, rarely following pop or
rock conventions many of these songs are mini-concepts or narratives
with dark, subversive, dystopian and 'taboo' themes that he would
develop in his later career. Marred by the uninspired addition of
superfluous string arrangements the music of this early period has been
captured by the Deram Anthology released in 1997 which also contains a
number of previously unreleased tracks.

BUCIUM

Prog Folk • Romania

Bucium biography
BUCIUM is a progressive folk rock band from Bucharest, Romania. Their
music is an updated, 21st century folk rock. Based on heavy metal of the
'80s and '90s, the music has a strong foundation of heavy guitar riffs
and powerful drumming (occasionally going up to blast beats), with an
energetic phrasing that reminds of power/symphonic metal. The
songwriting brings balance and variation, providing progressive
character: light follows heavy, thematic development follows explosion
via instrumental interplay. The main interest resides in the perpetual
lead exchanges between riffs and a hauntingly beautiful violin,
accompanied by grave, majestic vocal harmonies.

The ethnic
musical motifs employed reference both Celtic music (ancient and modern)
and Balkan musical heritage. However the epic-oriented songwriting
subdues the ethnic imprint to a musical and lyrical storytelling rather
than just jamming based on them, like in World Fusion music. The band's
ambition of evoking and recreating half-historical, half-mythical
moments from Romanian history is, so far, a successful one.

After
forming in 2000, the band has been through a long process of
maturation, which was completed with the release of the debut album
"Voievozii" in 2008. Mainstream acknowledgement has come in the form of
concert offers, of which opening gigs for APOCALYPTICA, TIAMAT,
LACRIMOSA, ELUVITIE, FINTROLL and recently BOB DYLAN are worth
mentioning. Currently the band is working for the completion of a new
album, "Miorita", the musical transposition of an ancient Romanian epic
poem (estimated release date: autumn of 2010).

Fans of BUCIUM
should also check out PHOENIX (the classic folk-prog band), LA PURA
REALIDAD (heavy prog band with lead violin and ethnic motifs) or TALITHA
QUMI (modern, heavy psychedelic folk).

BYRON

Crossover Prog • Romania

ron biography
byron (with lower case b) is a Romanian band formed
in spring 2006 by singer and musician Dan 'Byron' after the end of his
previous experiences with two of the most significant Romanian bands,
KUMM (already on PA) and URMA. Although it appeared following Dan
Byron's need for a medium to fully express his artistic ideas, byron
involves a cooperative model and highly skilled musicians. Alongside Dan
Byron (voice, flute, acoustic guitar) the band consists of 6fingers
(keyboards, voice, formerly a member of progressive metal band MAGICA
and other related projects), Costin Oprea (electric guitar), Costin
Mateşan (drums, also former member of Muse-like band OLIVER) and Vlady
Săteanu (bass, replacing former bassists Gyergyay Szabolcs and Jacob
Glick).

The music is a balanced crossover between alternative
rock, classic rock, progressive rock and blues with hints of pop and
metal. The musical influences of the band range from modern KING
CRIMSON, early GENESIS and JETHRO TULL to RADIOHEAD, PETER GABRIEL, JEFF
BUCKLEY and NOIR DESIR. The main features are Byron's intensely
expressive voice lines, the lead exchanges between guitar and keys, the
omnipresent interplay with a very active and precise rhythm section,
flute solos and sometimes orchestral arrangements. The sound is rich and
melodic, busy but never 'over-crowded'. The song format ranges from
short, contagious songs to longer and more meditative compositions.
Overall, byron should appeal to fans of bands such as PORCUPINE TREE,
DREDG, PHIDEAUX, THE DEAR HUNTER, etc.

CAMEL

Symphonic Prog • United Kingdom

o alta trupa care ar permite, dupa mine, apropierea de prog.
Camel biography
The roots of CAMEL go as far as 1964, when the
Latimer brothers Andrew and Bryan form part of a band called THE PHANTOM
FOUR, after gaining some fame, the band changes their name to STRANGE
BREW, a when the bass player Graham Cooper reaches the band. But things
were about to change, Ian Latimer and Cooper leave the band and Doug
Ferguson joins.

At this point drummer Andrew Ward joins the crew
and the seeds were growing in this new Blues oriented band called
simply THE BREW, and at last in 1971 with the arrival of keyboardist
Peter Bardens CAMEL is officially born.

In their first period
CAMEL releases four albums, the self titled debut, which was received
with limited enthusiasm by the public, which lead to the change of label
from MCA (Who didn't wanted to take risks) to Decca, with whom they
stayed for 10 years.

Followed by "Mirage", Snow Goose" and
"Moonmadness" (for many their essential trilogy), during the latest
album tour, the saxophonist and flute player Mel Collins joins and leads
CAMEL to a first radical change in the sound, as well as in the
formation because Alan Ferguson is replaced by the Ex CARAVAN bass
player Richard Sinclair.

With this formation CAMEL releases two
albums, "Rain Dances and "Breathless", which marks for many the end of
CAMEL'S golden era mainly because Pete Bardens leaves the band and the
next release "I Can See Your House From Here" is considered inferior to
the previous releases by the critic.

From this point the lineups
constantly changes but the band still releases seven more albums
received with different degrees of acceptance, until the last studio
album "A Nod And a Wink" sees the light in 2002 (the same year Pete
Bardens passes away) completing a large discography of 14 studio
releases, 9 live albums, 7 DVD's and several box sets .

CAN

Krautrock • Germany

Can biography
CAN is one of a few internationally known "Krautrock" groups; they are
famous for their repetitive and hallucinatory sound. CAN was founded in
1968 by LIEBEZEIT, Irmin SCHMIDT and Holger CZUKAY, and in their early
days they also included American singer Malcolm MOONEY or Japanese
vocalist Damo SUZUKI. They transformed progressive-rock into a science.
By bridging classical music, jazz music and rock music of their times,
CAN accomplished the first organic study on rhythm and texture. Their
hypnotic and glacial instrumental jams straddled the line between
free-jazz, acid-rock and chamber music. CAN's music can be difficult to
appreciate, yet their albums offer some of the best experimental rock
ever recorded. Then there are always the myths, the legends and the
fascination.

Here's a synopsis of most of their albums. I can
recommend "Delay" through to Soon over Babaluma. "Delay" was the first
album recorded although it was not released until 1981. Most of their
albums are great, particularly "Monster Movie", "Soundtracks", "Tago
Mago", "Future Days", and "Ege Bamyasi". After "Soon over Babaluma" I'd
say forget it as CAN loose there fresh approach for which they were
reknown. 1997 becomes the year where other musicians show the timeless
aspect of CAN's music in the new remix album "Sacrilege". And this is
the Sound of CAN in the nineties.

"Limited" and "Unlimited
Edition" are a collection from 1968 to 1974. In the autumn of 1978, a
double CD retrospective "Cannibalism 1" was issued on United Artists,
and, for many, still stands today as the definitive CAN collection. It
drew from the band's first six albums, but a tremendous sampling of
songs from their essential early albums. "Cannibalism 1" is the best CD
to buy to first experience the incredible music of CAN.

CAN's
legacy still resounds clearly across the landscape of contemporary
music. As Julian Cope concludes, "CAN will be remembered as one of the
great 20th century bands. I've listened to their music for over 23
years, and I still freak out at their staying power... Every one of
CAN's members is a hero, and a true star."

CANVAS SOLARIS

Canvas Solaris biography
The story of CANVAS SOLARIS began in 1999, playing a strange,
experimental form of extreme death/thrash metal, influenced by mainly
VOIVOD, CARCASS and GODFLESH. The early line-up, namely Nathan Sapp
(guitars, vocals), Jimmy McCall (bass guitar), Brad Jeffcoat (vocals)
and Hunter Ginn (drums), recorded two demos and played several shows in
South-Carolina. Jeffcoat and McCall left the band in 2002 and the group
added Ben Simpkins (guitar, bass guitar, keyboards) to the line-up and
began writing much more experimental instrumental technical,
jazz-inspired progressive music. In June 2003 they released their first
Ep, "Spatial/Design". The group scaled back from live appearances and
one year later arrived their first full-length album "Sublimation".

"Sublimation"
is demonstrating the talent of the members, a fantastic technical metal
album heavily influenced by SPIRAL ARCHITECT, WATCHTOWER, SPASTIC INK,
CYNIC, FATES WARNING, RUSH and even KING CRIMSON and THE MARS VOLTA.

Recommended for fans of complex, instrumental technical music.

CARAVAN

Canterbury Scene • United Kingdom

Caravan biography
CARAVAN were the other half of the WILDE FLOWERS -
the SOFT MACHINE being the other - that originated in Canterbury, Kent.
The band itself was originally formed in early 1968 by
guitarist/vocalist Pye HASTINGS, keyboardist Dave SINCLAIR,
bassist/vocalist Richard SINCLAIR (later of HATFIELD & THE NORTH,
NATIONAL HEALTH, etc.), and drummer Richard COUGHLAN. All four members
of CARAVAN were, at one time or another, in that band. They were a
leading exponent of what became known as "the Canterbury sound".

The
band's 1968 self-titled debut was a hybrid of jazz and psychedelia.
Things became serious with the second album, "If I Could Do It All Over
Again,I'd Do It All Over You" and would mark the start of their classic
period. The material was a very original mixture of styles including
classical, jazz, and traditional English influences. A MILESTONE IN
THEIR HISTORY. This recipe was used to great success on the next album,
"In the Land of Grey and Pink". This album was a perfect blend between
simple northern-English pop and complex progressive rock. Quite simply
one of the greatest progressive rock classics. The style dominated the
next album, "Waterloo Lily", released in May of 1972, which marked a
clear step towards jazz. Yet, Richard SINCLAIR's influence was clearly
apparent on the first side. "For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night"
marked another change in the band's sound, this time towards a more
streamlined symphonic approach. This album is not a bad album taken by
itself, but the classic Canterbury sound stopped here. For a more
representative look at CARAVAN in their prime, check out the preceding
three albums. This lineup also recorded the live album "Caravan and the
New Symphonia", a live 1973 performance accompanied by a full
orchestra.

Chicago biography
The original members of Chicago met at DePaul University in the late 60s
and began playing cover gigs under the name The Big Six. Moving to Los
Angelas in 68 they signed with Columbia records and released their first
album in April 1969. From the beginning the band members fused a three
piece horn section with a hard rock combo to play innovative music that
combined rock, jazz, pop, RnB and classical into a sound that was
distinctively their own.

Over the years Chicago gradually changed
membership, likewise the direction of their music shifted as well.
Eventually the lengthy arrangements and jazzy solos of the earlier
albums gave way to sophisticated pop and lite rock that matched the age
of their maturing audience. One of the most enduring acts in the history
of rock, Chicago continues to record and tour to this day.

COLOSSEUM

Jazz Rock/Fusion • United Kingdom

Colosseum biography
This is one of the pivotal progressive bands that emerged in the second
part of the Sixties. Unfortunalety the progressive world was more
impressed by The NICE and KING CRIMSON, so in my opinion COLOSSEUM is a
bit understimated progrock band. In '68 the founding members were
drummer Jon Hiseman, tenor sax-player Dick Heckstall-Smith and bass
player Tony Reeves, later joined by Dave Greenslade (keyboards), Dave
Clempson (guitar), Chris Farlowe (vocals) and Mark Clark, he replaced
Tony Reeves. COLOSSEUM made three studio albums: "Those Who Are To Die
We Salute You" and "Valentyne Suite" (both from '69) and "Daughter Of
Time" ('70). The music is a progressive mix of several styles (rock,
jazz, blues) with lots of sensational solos and captivating interplay.
In '71 the band released their highly acclaimed live album "Colosseum
live", a proove of their great skills on stage but also showing that at
some moments the compositions sounded a bit too stretched. After
COLOSSEUM was disbanded in '71, most of these members formed or joined
known groups like HUMBLE PIE (Clem Clempson), ATOMIC ROOSTER (Chris
Farlowe), GREENSLADE (Dave Greenslade re-united with Tony Reeves) and
COLOSSEUM II (founded by Jon Hiseman). In '91 the label Castle
Communications released the comprehensive compilation CD entitled "The
Time Machine".

The second album "The Valentyne Suite" is
considired as their best. It sounds mature and varied with the epic
titletrack as the highlight: it's build up around a mindblowing solo on
the Hammond organ by Dave Greenslade and great guitarwork by James
Litherland. And if you like brass (I don't!), Dick Heckstall-Smith
delivers stunning tenor-saxophone work.

similar to that of QUEENSRYCHE and FATES WARNING. The band started off
as BEOWULF back in 1982, when bassist Jeff Lords got together with
guitarists Jon Drenning and Ben Jackson. They then found in the person
of the enigmatic 'Midnight' an astoundingly powerful vocalist whose
ear-shattering screams are often compared to those of Geoff Tate
(QUEENSRYCHE). Over the course of 13 years and throughout various
personnel changes, they have released four albums.

Their first
two, the eponymous "Crimson Glory" (1986) and "Transcendence" (1988),
are considered their cult classics. Combining the twin-axe harmonies of
IRON MAIDEN and the melodic grace of QUEENSRYCHE, they feature
relatively straightforward song writing, where the band generally shies
away from complex arrangements. What stands out are guitarist John
Drenning's unique lead style and axe-slinging play, Jeff Lords'
intricate bass lines that give the music a good swagger and groove, and
front man Midnight's pure steel voice. Their other two albums, however,
are dispensable. "Strange and Beautiful" (1991) only lives up to the
first half of its title and "Astronomica" (1999) is a poor attempt at
recapturing past glories (with a new vocalist who is more likely to send
you running).

Fans of QUEENSRYCHE, and to a lesser extent DREAM THEATER, may want to check out the band's first two albums.

CULT OF LUNA

Experimental/Post Metal • Sweden

Cult of Luna biography
In 1998 CULT OF LUNA was formed in Sweden by
Johannes Persson (guitar) and Klas Rydberg (vocals). They were joined
soon after by Magnus Lindberg (drums),Erik Olofsson (guitar) and
Frederik Renstrom (bass). After a short period of time,Renstrom left
because of personal difficulties.

After rehearsing and recording a
two-track demo in 1999,the band decided an additional member was
required on electronics to round out their sound.Drummer Magnus Lindberg
had the experience and equipment so he assumed that role and Marco
Hilden took his place behind the drum kit.New bassist Axel Stattin was
also added to the line-up.

In 2003 CULT OF LUNA was signed to UK
label Rage of Achilles and released their self titled debut album.CULT
OF LUNA then signed a record deal with Earache Records and recorded
their 2003 sophomore album "The Beyond".After these sessions Axel
Stattin left the band and Andreas Johansson joined in on bass. The band
toured Europe in support of the album and then endured more line up
changes, with drummer Marco Hilden being replaced by Thomas Hedlund, and
Anders Teglund being permanently added on keyboards.Magnus Lindberg took
care of percussion and additional guitar parts.

After
extensively touring,Cult of Luna entered the studio to record their
third album. In 2004 "Salvation" was released and CULT OF LUNA went on
tour to support the new album. This tour saw the addition of Fredrik
Kihlberg on percussion and clean vocals. The live line up also underwent a
change because Thomas Hedlund couldn't participate because of other
commitments and Magnus Lindberg took over live drumming chores.

In
2006 CULT OF LUNA released their fourth album "Somewhere Along the
Highway".And in 2008 the band released their fifth full-length album
"Eternal Kingdom".

CULT OF LUNA'S songs are often long, slow,
repetitive and crushing, heavy sections of distorted guitars often
interspersed with orchestral interludes or extended, post-rock-esque
forays. They shun conventional song structures, opting for a sound that
evolves throughout a song, sometimes toward a climactic crescendo,
instead of a verse-chorus-verse pattern. That style, incorporating
sections of 'light and dark' into their music, has led to comparisons
with contemporaries such as ISIS, CALLISTO and PELICAN, as well as the
significantly older NEUROSIS.

Highly recommended for progressive metal and "post metal" fans.

CURVED AIR

Eclectic Prog • United Kingdom

Curved Air biography
CURVED AIR were formed in 1970 by Sonja Kristina (vocals), Darryl Way
(violin), Francis Monkman (keyboards), Florian Pilkington-Miksa (drums).
The group decided the name using a shortened version of Terry Riley's
composition "A rainbow in curved air". In their first album "Air
Conditioning", a prominent role was given to vocals and violin; the
album reached number 8 in the British charts. Then, in 1971, they
released "Second Album", highly recommended example of CURVED AIR sound
(a mix of acoustic folk and progressive rock).

1972 was the year
of "Phantasmagoria", with Mike Wedgwood as bass guitarist. After a long
tourney the band fell apart and Way formed the WOLF, while CURVED AIR
showed a new line-up with Eddy Jobson as violinist, but they will never
reach the performance level of the early two albums. In 1973, after "Air
Cut" (with a sound hard oriented), Wedgwood joined with CARAVAN and
Jobson with ROXY MUSIC. The four members of the original project made
the first reunion in 1975 for a tourney (album "Curved Air Live").
Afterwards Kristina and Way carried on with drummer Stewart Copeland,
bassist Tony Reeves, guitarist Mick Jacques and released "Midnight
Wire". Their last album was "Airborne", published in 1976. The second
reunion of the four former members was in 1990 for a concert in London
(album "Alive 1990"). In the same year was released an album of
previously unissued tracks recorded in 1973 ("Lovechild"). Finally, in
1995, an album of BBC sessions, called "Live at BBC".

CYNIC

Tech/Extreme Prog Metal • United States

Cynic biography
CYNIC was formed in November, 1987 by guitarist Paul
Masvidal and drummer Sean Reinert. To finish up the lineup, Mark Van
Erp (later of MONSTROCITY) was added on bass and a friend named Jack
Kelly was added on vocals thus making CYNIC a four-piece. This early
incarnation of CYNIC was focused on making only brutal death metal with
primary influence taken from bands such as VENOM, POSSESSED, KREATOR and
DESTRUCTION. It is this lineup that would later be featured on the
release of their first, self-titled demo in 1988.

After Jack
left in 1988, Paul took over vocal duties, Jason Gobel was added on
guitar and and in 1989, they cut their second demo, entitled
"Reflections Of A Dying World", consisting of four songs. All of the
songs on this demo were of the speed metal/thrash genre, with even some
punk elements incorporated within. This lineup soon began touring the
south Florida area and bootlegs exist of them as far back as May of
1988. Soon after, Mark left the band, Tony Choy was added on bass and in
1990, CYNIC released their third demo (also self-titled). This helped
to gain them a large following throughout southern and central Florida,
as well as their constant touring and cameo appearances in the south
Florida area. This new lineup would remain intact until at least 1991.

At
this time, the bands' influences were already starting to change. While
they were still listening to contemporaries like ATHEIST, and were
still inspired by seeing how "sick" some bands would get to express
themselves, their technical, musical and creative abilities were
growing, and consequently, they began listening to more technical forms
of music. Their primary influences soon included jazz and fusion, such
as Chick Corea and Allan Holdsworth, but also bands such as WATCHTOWER
and Frank ZAPPA. This change in technical abilities had already made its
way into their songs as the band took a great leap forward in
musicianship for their second and third demos.

MILES DAVIS

Jazz Rock/Fusion • United States

un gigant. Wink Miles Davis biography
Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926 - September 28, 1991)

Miles
Davis was not only a gifted musician (trumpet and composition) but also
a major artist of the twentieth century. He was in a constant search
for new forms of expression. Having been a painter himself, and not
unlike Pablo Picasso he tried to renew himself in all periods of his
life. He played on various early bebop records, recorded one of the
first cool jazz records, developped modal jazz, and was a pioneer in
jazz rock . Only a few musicians have mastered like him to shape new
forms and set aesthetic milestones.

The "electric" period of
Miles Davis started in 1969 and ended in1975 when Miles retired due to
health problems until the end of the seventies. In these years Miles
distributed an important part to jazz rock. Columbia released four
studio records 'In a silent way'(1969), 'Bitches Brew' (1970), 'A
tribute to Jack Johnson' (1970), 'On the Corner' (1972) and an important
number of live records (some released on vinyl only in Japan) :
'Black Beauty'/Live at the Fillmore West (1970), 'Live-Evil' (1970),
'Dark Magus' (1974) 'Agharta' (1975), 'Pangaea' (1975). A great part of
the studio tracks recorded during these years were only released in the
second half of the 70's and first half of the 80's on various
compilations.

DEAD CAN DANCE

Prog Folk • Australia

Dead Can Dance biography
In 1980 guitarist Brendan Perry left the Australian
punk group THE MARCHING GIRLS and began experimenting with electronic
music, particularly tape loops and rhythms. In 1981, Perry formed DEAD
CAN DANCE with vocalist Lisa Gerrard, bassist Paul Erikson, and drummer
Simon Monroe. By 1982, Perry and Gerrard decided to relocate to London;
Erikson and Monroe decided to stay in Australia. Since then, DEAD CAN
DANCE effectively worked as a duo with many session musicians and
collaborators helping them record in studio and perform live.

In
the spring of 1984, and with Erikson on bass they released their
eponymous debut album on 4AD label, which showed the British Post-Punk
and Gothic Rock influences. By the end of the year, the group had
released an EP called "Garden of the Arcane Delights". In 1985, DEAD CAN
DANCE released their second album, "Spleen and Ideal". The album
presented a change of style, experimenting more with the elements of
mediaeval, European folk and Worldbeat/Ambient music. It helped build
their European cult following, peaking at number two on the U.K. indie
charts.

"Within the Realm of a Dying Sun", the group's third
album, appeared in 1986, while in 1988 the band released their fourth
album, "The Serpent's Egg", which both rank among their best works.
After their fifth album "Aion", in 1990 the group toured America for the
first time, earning rave reviews. In 1991, the compilation "A Passage
in Time" was released on Rykodisc, making it the first American release
of DEAD CAN DANCE music. In the fall of 1993, the group released "Into
the Labyrinth", which became their first proper studio album to receive
an American release. It was followed by another American and European
tour, which was documented on the 1994 album and film, "Toward the
Within". In the summer of 1996, DEAD CAN DANCE released "Spiritchaser"
and embarked on an international tour. The duo officially disbanded in
1999, with Gerrard and Perry continuing work as solo artists.

In
2001, Rhino released the band's first comprehensive box set, "Dead Can
Dance 1981-1998". Gerrard and Perry reunited for a world tour 2005 while
Rhino once more recognized the duo with a greatest hits collection.
"Memento: The Very Best of Dead Can Dance" appeared in October 2005.
